Spanning2010s - 2020s

The Tudor Black Bay launched at Baselworld 2012 with the ref. 79220R: a 41mm faux-vintage diver with snowflake hands, a domed sapphire crystal, and a burgundy aluminium bezel. It was the moment Tudor pivoted from "the cheap Rolex" to a brand with its own design language. Five years later, the line had its own in-house movement (MT-series) and the BB58 reference (2018) brought the case down to a 39mm "vintage proportion" sweet spot that became the line's signature size.

The Black Bay family now spans diver, GMT, chronograph, Pro (38-day fixed bezel), S&G (steel and gold), and the Master Chronometer 7939 GMT released 2024 - the first Tudor with METAS certification. References listed by family below.

Why 79220 then 79230 then 79030

The reference numbers track the in-house movement migration. 79220R/B/N (2012-2016) used the ETA 2824. 79230 (2016-2018) introduced the in-house Cal. MT5602. 79030 = 39mm BB58 with MT5402. The 79830RB = BB Pro (39mm, GMT, MT5652). Tudor uses the third digit to encode roughly: 0 = 39mm "BB58 size", 2 = 41mm "BB classic size", 3 = 36mm or chrono.

What "BB58" actually means

The BB58 name (from "Black Bay 58") refers to the Tudor Submariner ref. 7924 of 1958, the first Tudor diver with 200m water resistance and big crown. The BB58 (ref. 79030 series, 2018) is a 39mm tribute to that 1958 silhouette: smaller than the 41mm classic Black Bay, no crown guards (technically yes, just smaller and more rounded), gilt or cream luminous hands. Has become the line's most-loved size.

The Master Chronometer move

In 2024, Tudor launched the Black Bay 58 GMT 7939A1 with METAS Master Chronometer certification - the same magnetic-resistance and accuracy testing that Omega applies to its Cal. 8800 / 9300 movements. This was the first Tudor (and the first Rolex-group watch outside Tudor's sister Rolex) to carry METAS. The 7939's Cal. MT5450-U2 has 65h reserve, COSC and METAS, and a glass exhibition caseback.
