Bravur

Swedish independent founded in 2011 by Magnus Appelryd and Johan Sahlin, two former cycling rivals turned friends and business partners. Bravur builds small-batch mechanical watches by hand on order from a workshop in Bastad, southern Sweden, with a design language rooted in Scandinavian minimalism and a parallel passion for cycling that shaped the brand's earliest references.

The Bravur Story

Bravur was founded in 2011 by lifelong friends Magnus Appelryd and Johan Sahlin, two former competitive cyclists from the 1990s Swedish racing scene who reconnected as adults around a shared interest in industrial design and mechanical watchmaking. Both founders trained as industrial designers and the brand carries that imprint: clean cases, restrained dials, and a deliberately small catalogue of references developed slowly rather than refreshed seasonally.

The brand operates from a small workshop in Bastad, a coastal town in southern Sweden, where the mechanical pieces are hand-built on order rather than produced to stock. That made-to-order model defines Bravur's commercial scale - production volumes are deliberately low, lead times are measured in weeks rather than days, and each watch is finished and tested individually before shipping.

Cycling has remained a thread through Bravur's identity from the first collection onward. The Team Heritage series and the cycling-inspired chronographs reference both founders' continuing relationship with the sport, and the brand has maintained a parallel cycling-watch programme alongside its dress and three-hand references. Distribution is direct from the brand's website with a small selection of independent retailers, keeping Bravur firmly inside the modern Scandinavian microbrand model rather than the conventional Swiss boutique network.

Iconic Collections

Since 2011
BW001 / BW002 / BW003
The original three-hand dress references that launched the brand. 40-42mm steel cases, Swiss automatic movements, restrained dial designs in Scandinavian minimalist style. The cleanest expression of the early Bravur design language and the references most often reviewed in the enthusiast press.
Cycling line
Team Heritage
The cycling-inspired collection. Chronograph and three-hand references that draw on the founders' shared cycling background, with dial colour and detailing that reference vintage racing aesthetics. The cycling programme is one of the few in the contemporary watch industry where the link is genuinely biographical rather than marketing-led.
Dress
Scandinavian Minimal
The continuing core line. Slim three-hand and small-seconds references with clean dials, applied indices, and Swiss automatic calibres in cases sized for everyday wear. Built on order from the Bastad workshop.
Limited
Small-Batch Editions
Periodic limited references and colour-variant runs released in small numbered series. Production cadence follows the brand's slow-design philosophy - new references arrive when they're ready rather than to a fixed seasonal calendar.

Heritage Timeline

2011
Bravur founded in Sweden by Magnus Appelryd and Johan Sahlin, two former cycling rivals turned friends with shared backgrounds in industrial design.
2010s
Initial three-hand dress references (the BW00x series) establish the brand's Scandinavian minimalist identity and build a following among microbrand enthusiasts.
Mid-2010s onward
Cycling-inspired chronograph and three-hand references introduced, formalising the parallel cycling programme that runs alongside the dress catalogue.
Current
Production continues from the Bastad workshop on a hand-built, made-to-order basis. New references and limited editions are released in small numbered runs as the slow-design programme allows.
