Bravur was founded in 2011 by lifelong friends Magnus Appelryd and Johan Sahlin, two former competitive cyclists from the 1990s Swedish racing scene who reconnected as adults around a shared interest in industrial design and mechanical watchmaking. Both founders trained as industrial designers and the brand carries that imprint: clean cases, restrained dials, and a deliberately small catalogue of references developed slowly rather than refreshed seasonally.
The brand operates from a small workshop in Bastad, a coastal town in southern Sweden, where the mechanical pieces are hand-built on order rather than produced to stock. That made-to-order model defines Bravur's commercial scale - production volumes are deliberately low, lead times are measured in weeks rather than days, and each watch is finished and tested individually before shipping.
Cycling has remained a thread through Bravur's identity from the first collection onward. The Team Heritage series and the cycling-inspired chronographs reference both founders' continuing relationship with the sport, and the brand has maintained a parallel cycling-watch programme alongside its dress and three-hand references. Distribution is direct from the brand's website with a small selection of independent retailers, keeping Bravur firmly inside the modern Scandinavian microbrand model rather than the conventional Swiss boutique network.
