Editor’s note: When it was first released, waaaaay back in 2015, the North Flag was a big deal. So much so that the main question in our review was whether or not Tudor was planning to move beyond their heritage core. Well, history has answered that question (heritage is here to stay), but that doesn’t … ContinuedThe post Is the North Flag the forgotten Tudor? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Hublot has been growing the Spirit of Big Bang line slowly and steadily, and though the SoBB Yellow Sapphire was quite the cool addition, this new tourbillon is (in my humble opinion) easily the best new offering in the collection. The Hublot calibre HUB6020 was designed specifically for the tonneau-shaped case of the Spirit, and … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The edgy, architectural Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

On first inspection I found the minimally modern approach of the case and bezel incredibly refreshing while the intricate more vintage approach of the dial kept Dryden Watch Co. Chrono Diver visually interesting. Here's a watch that isn't trying to re-invent the wheel by creating a watch that's totally kooky or outrageous.

The new 39mm white gold Royal Oak uses the ultra thin case and movement with the 2 hands configuration. The watch is intriguing primarily due to the unique dial color. Using the 2121 automatic movement, the 15202BC ticks at 19,800 vph and offers a 40-hour power reserve. It measures 8 mm on the wrist and is priced at US$55,400.

It’s well known that Omega loves an anniversary, but the one that I’m currently celebrating with them in Bienne is quite significant. This year marks 125 years since the Calibre Omega - a 19-ligne movement that was so significant that, a few years after its debut in 1894, the company changed its name to the … ContinuedThe post INTRODUCING: A vision in red – the brand new Omega De Ville Trésor 125th Anniversary Special Edition appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Here at Time+Tide we make no bones about our love of Tissot’s heritage offerings, but the truth of it is that those old-style pieces make up a small percentage of the brand’s line-up. Chronographs, in particular big sporty chronographs like this Chrono XL Classic, dominate the brand, at least here in Australia. And it’s easy … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Tissot’s Chrono XL Classic appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

I found the Pancor Watches P02 and I fell in love with it. This watch called to me for a three reasons: (1) It had a hi-beat movement. All of the watches I had experienced up to this point were 21.6k beats per hour, and I yearned for a smoother sweep; (2) it was black PVD and I thought that was awesome; (3) And the power reserve reminded me of that elusive Tudor North Flag.

The watch deftly combines a vintage aesthetic with modern technology and does it all without relying on the faux patina that can be so polarizing within the watch community. This piece helps to mark the 130th anniversary of Certina, references a watch dating back over half a century, and (given the Swatch Group’s exit from Baselworld) also marks Certina’s last hurrah at the venerated festival.

Longines heritage reissues are - much like the designs they’re inspired by - the stuff of legend. And speaking of legends, you might notice that the dial design of the Skin Diver resembles that of the Legend, with distinctive hand sets and long hour and minute markers. A little under two weeks ago, Time+Tide threw a party. Ostensibly, it was to launch our new print publication, NOW. Most of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches are built around one base - the 9S calibre, which turns 20 years old this year. There are certain (and few) movements in watchmaking that truly define a brand. Seiko’s Spring Drive is one of them. Moritz Grossmann’s first automatic watch reveals the maison’s new approach to self-winding. It features a modern interpretation of an older-generation device: a pendulum mass, referred to as an automatic hammer mechanism. Christened ‘Hamatic’, this piece transforms automatic winding into a fascinating visual experience within a brand new 106.0 calibre. Compared with standard rotor-based systems, this automatic hammer system is a thorough rarity. It works by transferring power from a moving bi-directional hammer with a heavy gold head that sits on a fine stem.

Grand Seiko’s limited editions are, in their own way, hype machines. They generate huge buzz and are, in the pretty fanatical world of GS enthusiasts, hotter than the proverbial hot cakes.
