Audemars Piguet unveiled the unexpected at Dubai Watch Week: an intelligent watch winder created in collaboration with Dubai Future Labs. Designed specifically for the brand’s latest perpetual calendar calibre, the device uses computer vision, a motorised arm, and Bluetooth connectivity to wind the watch, read the dial, and set all calendar indications automatically. It’s a curious blend of haute horlogerie and consumer robotics. Initial thoughts Perpetual calendars have long bedeviled collectors and after-sales service departments alike. Often tedious to reset after non-use, they can break or bind if adjusted at the wrong time. In the past couple of decades, this problem has been largely solved by watchmakers like Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, Stephen McDonnell, Andreas Strehler, Greubel Forsey, F.P. Journe, and most recently by Audemars Piguet. Given that Audemars Piguet is among the names that have developed a fool-proof perpetual calendar, the intelligent watch winder seems like a solution in search of a problem. The choice of the launch platform is also puzzling. On one hand, I understand why Audemars Piguet would develop the winder for its new cal. 7138; it makes sense to promote the new product. But on the other hand, the box would be far more useful if it worked for the brand’s earlier generations of perpetual calendars, which are more liable to break from improper use and need to be adjusted using pushers in the case. Artificial intelligence, whether we like it or not, plays an active role in all of our lives. When we search for something on the internet, call a customer service representative, or dash off a quick email, AI is working either passively in the background or very actively in the foreground in a number of ways that we simply can’t avoid. For a long time, I was a skeptic. I still am, basically, but I’ve accepted there are ways artificial intelligence can make my life easier. Like many others, I’ve started using ChatGPT nearly everyday for a variety of things that would otherwise suck time out of my day, and quite possibly the joy out of my life. (But never, it’s worth pointing out, to create articles for Worn & Wound – this is a red line we won’t cross.) Naturally, I’ve thought a little about how artificial intelligence could impact the watch industry, and change it for both the better and worse. Of course, it already is impacting the watch industry in a number of ways. I receive press releases on a daily basis that have clearly been polished or written from start to finish by artificial intelligence, and the impact of artificial intelligence on search results plays a huge role in who finds websites like ours, and how. But we haven’t yet reached a point where the use of AI is spilling over into actual watches worn on people’s wrists, at least not in ways that are transparent to the end user. When does an Apple Watch go from being a watch to being something else? I’m sure, for some, the answer is something like, “As soon as you walk into an Apple Store,” but (as I’ve discussed before) the Apple Watch has, especially in its last few iterations, really come into its own. Thanks to additions like GPS and cell service, it’s even become a decent phone replacement for those days when you want to leave your phone at home. Personally, I love the freedom I feel walking out of the house for a hike or bike ride without my phone, secure in the knowledge that if someone really needs to get a hold of me, they can (that I could also theoretically call for help isn’t the worst thing either).
