Gold. It’s the original precious metal – with a lustre that has shone unabated for millennia. Gold is the universal symbol of success, power, status and, obviously, wealth. These markers, while making it such a desirable material, can also make it tricky to wear, especially if you’d rather not look like a Boxster-driving-try-hard. The most important employee for Cartier in Shanghai is a quiet, modest lady with a rag. It is her job to keep the exhibition cabinets clean and transparent, and that sounds a lot easier than it is when inside these cabinets are the finest watches, clocks and objects of art that Cartier has created throughout […]

One of the most extraordinairy timepieces that Cartier presented this year was the Rotonde de Cartier, Earth and Moon and I have not even written a word about it. The reason for my negligence was not laziness, but more a matter of finding the right words to describe this very creative time piece. The Rotonde […]

The current collection of Tourbillon models by Cartier has increased to more than 10 different models and I am not even counting the different gold versions, just the various different models by themselves. From the first Ballon Bleu Flying Tourbillon, that was launched in 2007, to the spectacular Rotonde Flying Tourbillon Mysterieuse from the 2013 […]

During the last few years, the larger watch trend was dominating the Cartier watch collection quite a bit. We have seen watches like the first piece in the Fine Watch Making Collection, the hefty 46mm Ballon Bleu Flying Tourbillon, the really cool extra flat 46 mm Ballon bleu X-tra flat and of course the many […]

Cartier just pre announced for 2014, four new Tortue ladies models in pink- and in white gold. The Tortue that just had its 100 anniversary was originally designed as a mens model in 1912 and was throughout the years available in fairly small collections. The Ballon bleu that Cartier only launched almost eight years ago, is one of Cartier’s newest models and the one that actually became a huge success worldwide, in a very short time. Lately we received a few questions and picture requests, about the mono poussoir watches that Cartier had in the collection. Cartier’s creations have often been inspired by cultures and styles form other continents. Pierre Cartier travelled almost from the beginning all along the globe, to visit prominent clients and to be inspired by habits and traditions of other cultures. Chronographs are probably the most popular complication. They are pretty affordable (for a complication) masculine and have a sporty appearance that most men like, weather we’re talking mono poussoir chronographs or the three button chronographs, it’s a type of watch that we find in almost any watch collection. Cartier has currently two interesting chronographs in […]

Every time when I am going thru the largest book about Cartier clockes & watches; ‘The Cartier Collection’ / ‘Timepieces’ (Flammarion), I am amazed how good and not dated at all, these vintage time pieces look. Cartier is not a brand I normally cover during SIHH. After a quarter century at Cartier, Cyrille Vigneron was tapped for the top job in 2016, becoming President and Chief Executive Officer of perhaps the grandest name in jewellery. Under his stewardship Cartier’s lustre has only grown. Not only is the jeweller the second-largest watchmaker by sales, it is such a coveted marque that LVMH chief Bernard Arnault recently commented in the Wall Street Journal, “Cartier is a fantastic brand [but] it’s not for sale.” During Watches & Wonders, I met Mr Vigneron for an interview that ran longer than expected, but we barely touched on watches or jewellery. Dressed in a grey turtleneck, Mr Vigneron possessed the air of an intellectual, very much atypical for an industry where leaders are often big personalities and dressed to match. Yet Mr Vigneron is actually something of a social media influencer, albeit a professional one with over 82,000 followers on LinkedIn. His latest post on the professional social media platform posed the question, “What is true beauty?”, accompanied by a photo of a fallen autumn leaf. It received over a thousand likes and almost 100 comments. His posts on the network usually discuss abstract concepts while offering sharp insight, which is why I decided to leave out the watches (which we have already amply covered) and instead seek his perspective on bigger topics. The interview was edited for clarity and length. SJX: I follow your LinkedIn posts and find there’s always a philosophical, reflective...
