They are no strangers to each other; Jochen Benzinger teamed up with IWC to create for example the quite outrageous Portuguese Tourbillon Mystère Squelette. Outrageous in a sense that it simply makes you want to head straight to the marina, raise the main sail and set on a course to India, while parking yourself on […]

Good things can come in smaller sizes, and in case that you didn’t believe this yet, then there is IWC to prove it! They just introduced a whole collection of smaller sized watches within their Portofino-line. How small? 37mm in diameter. Indeed 3mm smaller than the 40mm Portofino automatic (ref.3565). Does 3mm make such a […]

The universe sometimes works in mysterious ways. With the passing of Robin Williams, the world has lost one of its greatest comedians. His daughter Zelda quoted Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” to commemorate him, and at the same time IWC is commemorating Antoine de Saint-Exupéry himself with a limited edition dedicated to his last […]

For many years IWC has held steadfastly to its motto, “Engineered for Men” and its instrument watches have garnered the lion’s share of attention. There’s another side to the firm, though, that’s expressed in the Portofino wristwatches. The Portofino collection got its start in the early 1980s and the ur Portofino is of course the famous ref. On Tuesday, I showed the IWC Portugeiser Jubilee…today are the extreme macros of the same watch. Owned by my great friend Eddie…thanks for the loan of watch. Do note this is a well loved, and often worn watch…I take no additional precautions to remove dust and evidence of wear. Details of the watch… The barrelRead More

Another IWC which was one of my dream watches in my early days in collecting. The Jubilee Portugese…what a beautiful, well proportioned watch. Though it was not always thought to be correctly sized. The IWC 5251 was a dream watch of mine when I was early in my watch collecting “career”…it was a grail watch, as even then, it was quite rare to find a piece readily available. Recently, over the course of a brutally cold weekend here in Concord, NH, I rewatched last year’s F1, the Brad Pitt vehicle that is essentially a very long advertisement for the sport for which it is named. It’s a fun movie, and even though it was made for giant screens and deafening surround sound systems, it played just fine at home as a fairly standard sports movie. I had been wanting to give the film another look as it was recently nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards (a bit of a surprise to most observers) and figured it was time to see how it stood up to a repeat viewing. The answer is that it’s still really enjoyable popcorn fare, but my one real reservation is in the almost nonstop product placement. IWC watches factor heavily into the texture of the film itself. If you look closely, you can see a watch or the IWC logo in more scenes than not. It speaks to the importance of the relationship between IWC and F1, so I was not at all surprised when I learned that IWC’s first big novelty release of the year would be a pair of watches representing a collaboration between the brand and F1 driver George Russell, who races for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team, which IWC has had a longstanding relationship with. Unlike previous watches IWC has released as part of their partnership with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS, this one is tied to a specific driver. Rather than the teal color highlighted in those earlier watches, these feature a more traditional blue hue, ...

The watch market is in rapid evolution. There was a time when watch brands were selling new timepieces, leaving the second-hand and vintage markets in the hands of independent shops. However, times have changed. Consumer behaviours have evolved, with watch enthusiasts rightfully demanding more trust in the process of acquiring pre-owned and vintage models. For […]

The use of luminescent materials on watches is far from new… Soon after the discovery of radium and its properties (and dangers…) by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898, watch dials – markers, numerals and hands – have been coated with radium and then different substances (tritium, Super-LumiNova) to produce light in the dark. Fully […]
