Cartier Opens ‘Crystallisation Of Time’ Exhibition in Tokyo

In the tradition of its extravagant exhibitions, Cartier has recently opened Cartier, Crystallisation Of Time in Tokyo’s National Art Centre. Made up of some 300 items, ranging from jewels to clocks to objet d’art, the exhibition is the third Cartier exhibition in Japan since the 1990s (and the 34th globally). Notably, half the exhibits are on loan from private collections, with the rest being from the Cartier Collection, the jeweller’s own trove of over 3000 items spanning 1860 to the modern day. More unusually, this is the first exhibition that includes contemporary Cartier creations from the 1970s and later, in contrast to past events that only included historical objects. The exhibition explores the jeweller’s rich history by juxtaposing vintage jewels, timepieces and objects against their modern equivalents or relations. So a lavish portico mystery clock made of gold, rock crystal and onyx from 1923 sits beside a 2016 mysterious tourbillon pocket watch hanging in its rock crystal and jade stand. Large ‘Portique’ mystery clock (left); and mysterious tourbillon pocket watch with stand Desk clock, circa 1929, made of ebonite, mother-of-pearl, and coral (left); and magnetic clock from 2016, in white gold, lapis lazuli, and mother-of-pearl It’s organised into three themes, detailing the jeweller’s work in materials, design, and cultural inspiration. The two scarab motif jewels, for instance, are six decades apart, but share the same Ancient Egyptian theme...

Sotheby’s Removes A. Lange & Söhne No. 41000 ‘Jahrhunderttourbillon’ From November 2019 Masterworks Of Time Auction – And You Won’t Believe Why

Sotheby’s justifiably described the tourbillon pocket watch No. 41000 as the most important watch made by A. Lange & Söhne. Nicknamed the Jahrhunderttourbillon ("tourbillon of the century") and introduced in 1900, it was until recently part of Sotheby’s bombastic Masterworks of Time auction. However, Sotheby's has removed the Jahrhunderttourbillon from the upcoming November auction and here Elizabeth Doerr reveals why.

RECOMMENDED READING: Cultural perceptions of time aren’t all straightforward

Here at Time+Tide, we write a lot about watches. What we don’t write about as much is what the watches are actually communicating to us - time. And while time seems fairly straightforward (or is it straightbackward?) as a concept, cultural perceptions of time are highly variable, with these differences impacting language, writing and commercial activity … ContinuedThe post RECOMMENDED READING: Cultural perceptions of time aren’t all straightforward appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The Australian launch of the Longines Legend Diver at Time and Tide HQ in Melbourne was our blackest event yet

At long, long last we were able to host the Australian launch of the Longines Legend Diver Black at our headquarters in Cremorne, Melbourne this week. A fistful of tourbillons and a fancy fish – 3 high-end standouts from Time to Move

Time to Move, which took place last week in Switzerland, is the higher end Swatch Group brands’ alternative to Baselworld. And because they’re the prestige brands, it’s only fitting to expect some prestigious watches. We were not disappointed. Here are three watches that are less about telling the time and more about showing the world … ContinuedThe post A fistful of tourbillons and a fancy fish – 3 high-end standouts from Time to Move appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

My pick of the 6 best new Omega watches for 2019, fresh from Time to Move

Omega, as you would expect from the Swatch Group powerhouse, had a panoply of new watches on display at Time to Move. EVENT: Launching Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine at our HQ (was a lot of fun)

On Monday, October 29 we threw a party to celebrate the launch of our new magazine. At least that’s what we said the party was about. In Felix and my opening speech, though, we admitted that it was at least as much, if not more, about thanking our readers and the local watch industry that had supported … ContinuedThe post EVENT: Launching Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine at our HQ (was a lot of fun) appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

INSIGHT: A brief history of time – as seen by Chanel

It’s a paradox that a luxury house as conspicuously feminine as Chanel should always have had a gender-bending streak. So here comes a quick bit of fashion history – and before you watch geeks roll your eyes and change the channel, let me say that this will help explain everything about Chanel’s watches. Including why … ContinuedThe post INSIGHT: A brief history of time – as seen by Chanel appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

LIST: The evolution of the wrist – 3 professionals who rely on wrist machines that tell the time and more

There are some sweeping generalisations in the watch world when it comes to the watches preferred by professionals in different fields – Breitling for airline pilots, Hublot for NBA players, Nomos for architects… but reality doesn’t quite conform to prevailing watch-lover logic. The fact is those that leap from high altitudes don’t choose a Zenith as … ContinuedThe post LIST: The evolution of the wrist – 3 professionals who rely on wrist machines that tell the time and more appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

EVENT: The poetry of time is all in the details at Van Cleef & Arpels’ first Australian high jewellery exhibition

A three course, thoroughly French menu paired with Premier Cru Burgundy? Tick. A white-gloved waiter per guest? Tick. And a venue that Zelda Fitzgerald would have felt at ease in? Tick.
