Sinn releases the very special 910 Anniversary split-seconds chronograph, an understated but generously well designed piece. As already established since the brand's earlier days, Sinn truly has an eye for quality without the woes of ‘over engineering’ things.

Finishing encompasses a variety of techniques. The application of traditional Genevan/Swiss-style finishing is not unlike writing a sonnet: there is a very particular, strict form you have to follow, but within that form, you are free to express yourself to the limits of your skill and taste. The basic vocabulary includes anglage, or the bevelling […]

Tudor was founded by none other than the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, in 1946 to be an affordable alternative to Rolex, using the parent company’s cases but fitting them with third-party movements to keep prices lower. With a few exceptions, the early Tudor watches largely mimicked Rolex models, and even sometimes bore the Rolex […]

The technical and aesthetic challenges that have to be surmounted in crafting a fine tourbillon are reasons why they are especially prized. One very basic problem, is power. Mainsprings should be kept as weak as possible in order to reduce wear, but they need to be powerful enough to deliver sufficient energy to keep the […]

The Ulysse Nardin Freak arrived at the beginning of the 21st century and was by far the most radical reinterpretation of the wristwatch since wristwatches had first started to be worn over a century before. The mechanical renaissance had at that point been well underway for over a decade, but wristwatch design, with very few […]

“Coast Guard, this is motor-vessel Bonsai, we have a missing diver in the water. Repeat, missing diver.” I scanned the choppy water as we motored in increasing arcs, realising the near-impossibility of spotting a person in the 7ft (2m) swells. I’d rehearsed this scenario in my head a hundred times, but nothing could prepare me […]

Montblanc released the Heritage Chronométrie Collection Twincounter Date at SIHH 2016. This watch spiked our attention because of its utilitarian design and understated beauty. It stands out from the usual time and date wristwatch primarily because of its reinterpreted dial. While not excruciatingly obvious, the unusual subdial positioning of the seconds counter juxtaposed with a larger date subdial is what makes this watch so exciting to us.

The good thing about watch collecting is that it’s completely race agnostic – crossing any perceived cultural and language barriers. But being able to read and soak up knowledge about the latest and greatest watches in a language other than your first can be a pain at times – and especially so in Asia! WeRead More

I cannot shut up about this watch. Is that bad? The moon wasn’t always female. Well actually, the moon was never female, because technically it has no gender - it is an inanimate chunk of rock - but you know what I mean. People think of the moon as being feminine. It’s interesting to note that in most ancient cultures, the moon was seen as […]

I like yellow gold. I know this is not a popular choice by any means, but I’m not going to apologise for it or anything. There is something about the unabashed richness of the hue in question that I find impossible to ignore. Rose gold, when used sparingly, can impart incredible warmth to a timepiece. […]
