Rolex, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin… Just how big is Tom Cruise’s travelling watch roll?

Tom Cruise was on the mother of all press trips for Top Gun: Maverick and he obviously had the watch roll to back it up throughout his travels. Here is a comprehensive list of every watch we’ve spotted so far, from Cartier to Vacheron to Rolex and back to Cartier – it’s a wild ride … ContinuedThe post Rolex, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin… Just how big is Tom Cruise’s travelling watch roll? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Ryan Gosling reps TAG Heuer in new film “The Gray Man”

Almost exactly one year ago, the incredibly talented (and handsome) Ryan Gosling was announced as a TAG Heuer ambassador. When I covered this announcement, I noted that I was very excited to see how this partnership would develop. Today, we see a major fruit of this relationship in the form of a fitting wrist-cameo in … ContinuedThe post Ryan Gosling reps TAG Heuer in new film “The Gray Man” appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Every Watch Tells A Story: “It’s a travel watch, it’s a weekend beater, it’s a lot of fun”

Back in the day, there used to be a tradition of people being rewarded for long service at their workplace with the gift of a gold watch. Presumably, the idea was that during their years of retirement as they tended their vegetable garden or wandered down to the golf course, they could look down at … ContinuedThe post Every Watch Tells A Story: “It’s a travel watch, it’s a weekend beater, it’s a lot of fun” appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

What would I tell my younger self about watch collecting?

It’s been years since I got into this hobby of collecting watches. When I started, I was asking myself: “What would I leave behind for the ones I love?” The timelessness of watches and the amazing mechanics within them provided the perfect canvas for an object which could bestow such personal meaning. Now, eight years … ContinuedThe post What would I tell my younger self about watch collecting? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Five of our favourite watch and fashion brand collaborations

Collaborations have been the headlining trend in the fashion world in recent times, serving as the perfect way to create excitement, owing to the generally limited nature of the releases. Naturally, it only makes sense for watch brands to jump onto the hype train, which is reflected in the number of joint ventures, whether that … ContinuedThe post Five of our favourite watch and fashion brand collaborations appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Richard Mille Unveils the Thinnest Mechanical Watch Ever

Having signed Ferrari as a partner last year, Richard Mille was expected to debut a Ferrari wristwatch – and probably one with a seven-figure price tag. And so it has, although the watch itself is certainly a surprise. The first watch to result from the partnership is the RM UP-01 Ferrari, the thinnest mechanical watch ever at just 1.75 mm high, besting the previous record holder by 0.05 mm. Very wide and extremely flat, the RM UP-01 achieves that by relying on familiar principles in terms of mechanical deconstruction and reduction, but takes them slightly further to shave off the millimetres. Initial thoughts The last couple of years have seen the record for the thinnest mechanical watch change hands rapidly, with Piaget taking the title in 2018 with the AUC (that came to market in 2020), followed by Bulgari earlier this year with the Octo Finissimo Ultra. The Italian jeweller did not retain the crown for long because Richard Mille has just claimed the title with the RM UP-01 that stands 1.75 mm high, compared to 1.8 mm for the Bulgari. Tellingly, the approach taken by Richard Mille echoes that of Piaget and Bulgari, essentially deconstructing the movement and doing away with as many components as possible. As a result, the RM UP-01 has parallels with the former record holders, most obviously in the tiny time display as well as the deconstructed winding and setting mechanism that each require a key. That indicates that absolute thinness has more or less been achieved...

The Longines Dolce Vita x YVY collection shows how a strap can redefine a watch

Leather is a material taken for granted in the world of watch enthusiasts. Yes, we may appreciate a finely made strap, even having one custom made to order. But a strap has always been a secondary compliment to the centrepiece that is the watch. With the Longines Dolce Vita x YVY collection, however, the straps … ContinuedThe post The Longines Dolce Vita x YVY collection shows how a strap can redefine a watch appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Every Watch Tells A Story: “My Vacheron had disappeared from my wrist”

EDITOR’S NOTE: These videos for our Every Watch Tells A Story series were filmed off-the-cuff at the Time+Tide Club Christmas party. Here, Editor Luke tells the story about how he lost his watch and learned that “vintage” is sometime just a euphemism for old and decrepit. “Price on application”: the most annoying three words any watch buyer can ever hear

I recently had to write a round-up of 24 of the most intriguing watches of 2022.  The brief was for a glossy lifestyle magazine with an upmarket audience and some of the glossiest paper stock you’ll ever see. When it came to the reviews, all the usual suspects were present and correct from Rolex to … ContinuedThe post “Price on application”: the most annoying three words any watch buyer can ever hear appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Furlan Marri Introduces the Ref. 2116-A “Sector” Dial Automatic

A brand that made its debut just last year, Furlan Marri is all about affordable watches with retro style – just like many of its peers that entered the business around the same time. But the brand manages to set itself apart with a keen sense for design and details, something that was evident in its inaugural model, a quartz chronograph modelled on the Patek Philippe ref. 1463. Now the brand unveils something that’s arguably more compelling, the Reference 2116-A “Black Sector”. Once again vintage in style with compact proportions, the “Black Sector” is however automatic. Initial thoughts My first impression of the Reference 2116-A was positive. The styling is appealing and it is well priced, despite being a major step-up from the quartz chronograph in terms of case quality and the movement. In fact, the 2116-A is very well priced. It costs about US$1,250 but brings along fancy features such as artfully finished “cow horn” lugs, which is typically found on more expensive watches or actual vintage watches. At the same time, the watch is replete with retro details that collectors will like. That includes a properly proportioned dial where everything is laid out just nice, in contrast to many modern-day “sector” dial that can appear sparse. And the Breguet numerals may not be original or novel, but they are pleasing. As appealing as it is, the 2116-A still has a few shortcomings, at least for me personally. One is the wide cover for the central boss of th...

Timex jumps onto the Stranger Things’ 1980s bandwagon with new capsule collection

Given that nostalgia often feels like the dominant mode of inspiration for modern watchmaking – heritage reissue, anyone? – Timex’s collaboration with Stranger Things makes perfect sense. Top 5 Reasons Why Watch Brands Need To Tread EXTREMELY Carefully with NFTs

Trilobe is admittedly a rather strange name for a rather strange brand, but it’s that level of oddity that so often creates fantastic watches when paired with next level engineering. The rules of engagement: Can you buy the person you plan to marry a watch instead of a ring?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Let’s face it, a lot of marital traditions have thankfully changed.
