GONE IN 60 SECONDS: Smoke and mirrors - the Hublot Big Bang All Black Sapphire

[su_vimeo url=”https://vimeo.com/159551168″] Ten years ago Hublot pioneered the black-on-black-on-black look in watches. Sure, it made it hard to read the time, but when your watch looked that cool who could care? They called it (appropriately enough) ‘All Black’ and this year they’ve released a number of special limited editions to celebrate. The standout is this … ContinuedThe post GONE IN 60 SECONDS: Smoke and mirrors – the Hublot Big Bang All Black Sapphire appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

WHY I WEAR: Breguet - Glenn and his Tradition GMT

Some watches always get the double tap when they show up in our Instagram feed. One such model is Glenn’s (AKA @syn_chronus) ridiculously lovely Breguet Tradition GMT. Not only because it’s a stunning watch in its own right, but also for the fact that we simply don’t see too many out there. So we got in … ContinuedThe post WHY I WEAR: Breguet – Glenn and his Tradition GMT appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

[su_vimeo url=”https://vimeo.com/178997873″] You don’t need to have visited Australia to know one thing about us: we love sport. In fact, love is too lightweight a word. We worship it; playing sport, watching it, talking about it, listening to people talk about it, if sport’s involved we are there. Which is why this past week at … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Omega boss Raynald Aeschlimann talks heroism and happiness at Rio 2016 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: How to wear a gold watch, with Cartier and Chris Edwards

Gold. It’s the original precious metal – with a lustre that has shone unabated for millennia. Gold is the universal symbol of success, power, status and, obviously, wealth. These markers, while making it such a desirable material, can also make it tricky to wear, especially if you’d rather not look like a Boxster-driving-try-hard. On top … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: How to wear a gold watch, with Cartier and Chris Edwards appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 5th August, 2016 - Manga, irony and a suspiciously familiar dial

For some reason we’ve been humming ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ this week and exhibiting a far greater than usual interest in the sports of fencing and field hockey (the Kookaburras beat the Irish 1-0 on Wednesday). It must also be said that the occasional call and response of Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! THE PATEK PHILLIPE GRANDMASTER CHIME 175TH ANNIVERSARY - The Patek Philippe Ref. 5175 Perpetual Date Repeater, Grand Sonnerie, Minute Repeater And Alarm, A Masterpiece Of Chiming Complications

Leading up to Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary, speculation and anticipation were running wild in watch enthusiast circles around the globe. And the recurring theme rising to the forefront of the collective Patek devotee’s imagination was that of a grande sonnerie. A grande sonnerie is a watch that features a minute repeater but is also able […]

Watches, Stories, & Gear: Watches on the Runway, A Second Look at Bremont, and Lancaster Watch Weekend

J. Press’ Vintage Watches New York Fashion Week wrapped this week, and I was lucky enough to attend a few shows, most notably J. Press, which is now under Jack Carlson’s leaderhsip. From my front-row seat, there was plenty to take in, from the Fall-Winter 2026 collection and the debut of J. Press womenswear to John Slattery from Mad Men sitting across the runway from me. But once the show started, I was more focused on the models’ wrists than anything else. For the show, Jack Carlson worked with Eric Wind and Wind Vintage, who brought a collection of 50 vintage watches to New York for Carlson to choose from. Pieces from Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Heuer, Universal Genève, Tudor, and Dunhill found their way onto the runway, selected and paired with looks throughout the collection. Now showing his second season, Carlson’s vision for the brand is coming into focus, where his knack for worldbuilding and getting the fine details perfected continue to shine through. Insta360 Luna Pro I’m going to be 35 years old in two weeks and, I have to tell you, thank God I’m not any younger. I grew up at the perfect time for being online. While I’m not a digital native, I’d say I’m a digital green card holder. I’ve been online long enough to understand the lingo, but I didn’t grow up completely immersed in the culture. Had I been, I definitely would have had a YouTube channel. And an embarrassing one at that. I would have sung on there (à la Millie Bobby Brown), tried m...

Bring a Loupe: An Omega Suverän, A Universal Genève Cabriolet, A Vacheron Constantin Overseas, And A Vintage Zenith Chronograph

Congrats on making it through another week, Baller, and your reward, sadly, is not more information about an extraordinary new Rolex, nor is it a pretty fantastic video with a legendary rapper, but instead just a quick roundup of some excellent watches out waiting for new owners. Scorekeeping last week's picks, the Smiths DeLuxe sold for 6,000 GBP, the Smiths W10 for €1,400, the Gübelin 18k triple-date moonphase remains available, the Universal Genève FS went for 600 GBP, and the Autavias sells today. Strays Photo courtesy of Drouot. If you've been holding onto an old steel chronograph pusher cap and don't know the case it works with, maybe have a look at this Heuer chronograph (presumably ref. 2444) and consider the JLC Memovox in the same lot an added bonus. Speaking of Memovox (I'm not guessing the plural of that noun), this sure checks a few boxes should you find yourself in the market for a lovely vintage example. I covered a Hamilton Cross Country a few weeks back, and here's a similar example if that one managed to get its hooks in you. For the Beatles mega-fan in your life, this Old England Apple watch is unlikely to be something they've seen (it's also unlikely to sell for less than 3x the €200 high estimate). This Vacheron Constantin 2045 is just lovely; this Corum bears a shocking resemblance to David Bowie's 1979 SNL performance look, and if there's a cooler tropicalized Carrera up for auction this week than this one, I didn't see it. Omega Suverän You'r...

Auctions: Rare And Unique White Gold Cartier Wristwatch Fetches Record $3.4 Million At Hong Kong Auction

A Cartier Cheich, a rare wristwatch awarded as a prize to consecutive Paris-Dakar Rally winners, sold for a record $3.4 million in Hong Kong, becoming the most expensive Cartier wristwatch sold at auction. The record price underscores the surging interest among collectors and speculators for rare models and designs by the Paris-based watch and jewelry maison. One of only five known examples of the Cheich, the watch was produced by Cartier as a one-off, unique piece in 2010, cased in white gold and powered by a quartz movement.  Sold by Sotheby's on the first day of its 'Important Watches' auction in Hong Kong on Friday, the watch spurred a nine-minute bidding war with online, telephone and in-person bidders pushing the price to HK$26,520,000 including fees or about $3,413,124, Sotheby's said in a statement. The result eclipses the $2 million paid for a London Cartier Crash from 1991 at Christie's Geneva auction in May. That watch bested another Crash sold by Sotheby's just weeks before for about $1.99 million.  Cartier Cheich in white gold sold for about $3.4 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong auction.Image: Sotheby's Founded in 1978 by motorcycle racer Thierry Sabine, the Paris-Dakar Rally was a legendary motor sports race of endurance, navigation and mechanical engineering, spanning some 10,000 kilometers (6,214 miles) from the French capital across the Sahara desert to Dakar, Senegal. An early sponsor of the race, Cartier and the brand's then-president, Alain-Dominique P...

Fortis, Berneron, and More Join Watches and Wonders 2027, Now Featuring 75 Brands

Watches and Wonders 2027 is still months away, but the specifics of the event are beginning to come into clearer focus. News broke this morning that the roster of brands has grown once again, and now numbers 75 in total. It had previously been announced that Breitling (along with their House of Brands cohorts Universal Geneve and Gallet) would be joining the fair, and this morning’s news sees several additional brands joining them that sit across a variety of price points and segments of the industry (including a brand that has attended its fair share of Windup Watch Fairs).  The headline grabbers in terms of participation are likely Berneron and Porsche Design. Porsche Design has grown considerably in recent years with an aggressive release schedule iterating on their iconic Chronograph 1 design. Berneron is arguably the hottest independent brand at the moment, and has been the subject of much discussion just in the last weeks following the public sale of a Mirage for over $500,000 on Loupe This (the retail price sits around CHF 51,000).  While those two brands likely have the highest profiles of the newcomers to Watches & Wonders, there are several others that I think are interesting from an enthusiast and business point of view. Kerbedanz, a Swiss brand that for much of its 15 year history has made custom watches exclusively for private clients, has been making a concerted effort to get their name into the minds of watch lovers this year, exhibiting at Geneva Watch ...

First Look - The Blancpain Lady B, a Small, Spherical and yet Mechanical Wrist-Worn Jewel

With its motto of never producing quartz watches, its manufacturing capabilities and its rich heritage in dive watches, Blancpain is often spontaneously associated with technical, masculine watchmaking. But this overlooks an important chapter in the brand’s history. In the middle of the 20th century, its development was driven by Betty Fiechter, a remarkable figure at […]
