Business News: Swiss Watch Exports to Hong Kong Post Biggest Fall in 20 Years

Trade body Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) just released its monthly export figures for Swiss watches – a proxy for the broader luxury watch market since Swiss timepieces dominate – and the February numbers are bleak. The month’s statistics illustrate two obvious trends that have shaped in the industry recently: the COVID-19 coronavirus is having a massive impact, and low-cost Swiss watches are being trounced by low-cost smartwatches. An Asian crisis, for now Compared with February last year, the value of exports globally declined by 9.2% – with export volume plunging 22.2% – but as the report notes darkly, the drop “does not yet fully reflect the actual situation in certain markets.” Unsurprisingly, the steepest declines were in the biggest Asian markets – China and Hong Kong – which suffered the worst period of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in the first two months of the year. The biggest fall was in Hong Kong, where exports fell 42% – the largest monthly decline in 20 years. The city imported just CHF143m of Swiss watches, compared to CHF246m for the same month last year. Exports to China fell 51.5% to CHF73m, from CHF151m for February 2019. February was merely an acceleration of a months-long decline. For the first three months of the year, exports to Hong Kong have fallen 33% compared to the same period last year, while exports to China are down 22%. Fears Debuts a New Watch Family with the Arnos Pewter Blue

So far this year, subtle iteration has been the name of the game when it comes to new watches. Most of the notable new watches we’ve seen from brands of all sizes haven’t really been new at all, but variants based on ideas that have come before. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. It’s good to provide your customers with options, and sometimes a new color or texture can genuinely breathe life into a collection. But let’s be real: we want to see new watches that see brands experimenting, pushing themselves, and expanding their design vocabulary. So it’s exciting to see Fears announce the Arnos today, an entirely new family of watches based on watches from the brand’s historic archives.  Named for Arnos Vale, the neighborhood in Bristol where you’ll find Fears headquarters, the Arnos collection was conceived as the family of watches that would be home to case shapes with an angular profile. The first watch out of the gate, the Arnos Pewter Blue, brings back a traditional rectangular platform to the Fears catalog. The case has been designed with a pronounced curve to the caseback and crystal, an effort to make the four sided watch a bit more ergonomic. It’s crafted from steel and measures 33.5mm across with a 40mm lug to lug measurement. Case height is a tidy 8.4mm.  The blue dial at the center of the Arnos is surrounded by what Fears refers to as an “outer dial” and features a distinctive hobnail pattern cut by a CNC machine that is then Rhodi...

H. Moser Debuts the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Tantalum Blue Enamel, their First Watch in the Exotic Metal

Moser’s latest is the brand’s first ever release in tantalum, a rarely used metal with unique characteristics that make it one of the more rewarding metals in all of watchmaking. In other words, it has a beautiful aesthetic impact, but it takes a lot of work and knowledge to get it to that point. Using it at all is something of a flex for any brand, and Moser is throwing down the gauntlet to a certain extent with this release. Somewhat predictably, they’ve incorporated what has come to be the brand’s signature complication, a unique and easy to read perpetual calendar, into their first tantalum watch, all with an elaborate enamel dial with a distinct hammered texture.  The clear highlight of the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Tantalum Blue Enamel is the use of tantalum, so we’ll start there. Tantalum is extremely dense and strong, qualities which make it an excellent candidate as a case metal for a luxury watch. It’s also very corrosion resistant, and develops a very thin layer of oxidation when exposed to air that naturally protects it. Tantalum also has a gray-blue tone to it that is quite unlike any other metal, giving it a unique quality that no other metal can match.  The reason tantalum is so uncommon in watchmaking is because it is very difficult to machine thanks to a melting point that comes in around 3000 °C.
