G-Shock Introduces the “Extra-Thin” GA-2100 Carbon Core Guard

The new G-Shock GA-2100 is likely the most wearable in the line-up, being the thinnest G-Shock ever. Its compact dimensions – and analogue hands – gives it the feel of a conventional watch, avoiding the extremely oversized style of many G-Shocks. Just 11.8mm high, the GA-2100 is thinner than the Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch (13mm) and the Rolex Daytona (12.2mm). The case diameter is 45.4mm, though it looks and feels substantially smaller. G-Shock inventor Kikuo Ibe at the launch of the GA-2100 in Singapore Though reduced in size, the GA-2100 has the traditional G-Shock case construction that includes an inner protective bumper around the electronic module. Visible around the steel case back, the bumper is made of carbon composite – which Casio has named the Carbon Core Guard – which is a dark marbled grey and distinct from the black resin outer case. The octagonal bezel is immediately reminiscent of the Royal Oak, but according to Casio it is actually a reworking of the bezel of the original G-Shock of 1983, the DW-5000C, which was octagonal, albeit one with unequal sides. The GA-2100 has an analogue displays for the time and day of the week, but also all the usual electronic functions of a G-Shock in two LCD windows, including multiple time zones, stopwatch, alarm, countdown and calendar. Key facts and price Diameter: 45.4mm Height: 11.8mm Material: Resin and carbon composite with steel back Water resistance: 200m Movement: 5611 Functions: Multi-fu...

Hands-On: Urwerk UR-111C “Pistol” SJX Watches

Hands-On: Urwerk UR-111C “Pistol”

The average Urwerk is distinctly sci-fi in appearance, more Star Trek than Games of Thrones. But every once in a while Urwerk gives one of its watches the ornately-fully-engraved treatment, with the latest being the UR-111C “Pistol”. It’s a one-off creation based on the UR-111C, a watch inspired by the earlier and much more expensive UR-CC1, itself modelled on the 1950s Patek Philippe ref. 3414, an experimental wristwatch nicknamed “Cobra”. The standard UR-111C has a streamlined case with a mechanical looking details, very much in the house style of Urwerk. The Pistol, in contrast, is decorated on all surfaces with an ornate motif that’s hand-engraved by Urwerk’s go-to engraver. It was commissioned by a client who has a soft spot for such engraved Urwerk watches; the UR-111C “Pistol” is his third fully engraved watch. (Editor’s note: This Pistol shares the same name as the EMC Pistol from 2015, and was decorated by the same engraver, but is a completely different model.) Inspired by 19th century French wrought iron fixtures, the motif is in relief, raised against the background by only a fraction of a millimetre but enough to give it significant depth. Add to that the refined, narrow and perfectly straight lines of the decoration, and the talent of the engraver is obvious. Credit for the work goes to Florian Güllert, an Austrian engraver who trained as a gunsmith and usually decorates firearms. Based in Klagenfurt, a city in the south of ...

RECOMMENDED READING: This is what Kanye’s go-to art guy thinks of Breguet

Breguet - as we discovered last week - is a pretty classic brand. Heck, they’ve even got a line called the Classique. So when we saw a story on what Wes Lang - controversial American contemporary artist and collaborative creative to the stars - thought of the buttoned-up brand, you can bet we hit the … ContinuedThe post RECOMMENDED READING: This is what Kanye’s go-to art guy thinks of Breguet appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

This guy did a survey and found that 38mm is the perfect watch size – here are our other takeaways

The guy in question is none other than Mark Cho, who’s kind of a big deal in the world of menswear. One of the co-founders of The Armoury and co-owner of Drake’s. He’s also a watch fanatic. He spent one of his first paychecks on an Omega Chronostop, and admits that after falling down the rabbit … ContinuedThe post This guy did a survey and found that 38mm is the perfect watch size – here are our other takeaways appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Remember when that guy bought a broken Rolex-made Panerai at a car boot sale for £10?

Editor’s pick: Whenever I pop into an op shop (or thrift store for our American readers), I always make sure to have a look at the watches, JUST IN CASE. Because you never know, you might just have the level of luck of this guy who, in 2016, picked up a Panerai that turned out … ContinuedThe post Remember when that guy bought a broken Rolex-made Panerai at a car boot sale for £10? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The Australian launch of the Longines Legend Diver at Time and Tide HQ in Melbourne was our blackest event yet

At long, long last we were able to host the Australian launch of the Longines Legend Diver Black at our headquarters in Cremorne, Melbourne this week. It heralded the watch officially going on sale in our shop, where it will be available for the next two months exclusively in Australia. To say that the moment … ContinuedThe post The Australian launch of the Longines Legend Diver at Time and Tide HQ in Melbourne was our blackest event yet appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Revisiting the $20k fantasy watch collection, reader edition

Editor’s note: The premise of the 20K Fantasy Watch Collection is simple: construct a hypothetical watch collection with as many watches as you like for as close to $20,000 AUD as possible. The only other stipulation - you can’t choose any watches that you currently own. As for whether you choose new or second hand, it’s … ContinuedThe post Revisiting the $20k fantasy watch collection, reader edition appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

‘Too big, too chunky, not versatile…’ Why the Fifty-Eight was the answer to this guy’s Tudor Black Bay blues …

Editor’s note: There were some notable absences at Baselworld 2019. A new Milgauss from Rolex, a new Monaco from TAG Heuer; in fact, the only birthday that happened on schedule, apart from the barnstorming return of Doxa in time for its 130th, was the glorious profusion of Zenith El Primero models. But no missing model was quite … ContinuedThe post ‘Too big, too chunky, not versatile…’ Why the Fifty-Eight was the answer to this guy’s Tudor Black Bay blues … appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Creux Automatiq evolve their offering with the Diamondback CA-08

Last year I had the pleasure of reviewing the Ghost Explorer, a contemporarily styled sports watch from Australian-based Creux Automatiq. It was a surprisingly sophisticated and solid piece of kit, so when I saw posts of their forthcoming line, the Diamondback, I was keen to get my hands on one.  Fast forward to me opening … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Creux Automatiq evolve their offering with the Diamondback CA-08 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: Andrew’s top 3 picks of SIHH 2019 over $35k

If the over $35,000 price point is not the most crowded at SIHH, it is equal to the 20-35k bracket before it. There are a lot of watches to choose from. From Baume & Mercier, with a well-priced perpetual calendar that dropped just over 35kAUD, to Richard Mille’s sweet Bonbon confection, practically all brands were … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Andrew’s top 3 picks of SIHH 2019 over $35k appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: Felix’s 3 favourites from SIHH 2019, from $35K and above

So, let’s start with the serious … A. VIDEO: Felix’s top 3 watches from SIHH 2019 – between $10k and $35k

My last list - a trio of well-priced SIHH offerings - could be neatly broken down into a loose theme of air, sea and land. But this trifecta, covering the much broader $10,000 – $35,000 price bracket, is much less easily pigeon-holed. But if I had to find commonalities I could well go with elegant … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Felix’s top 3 watches from SIHH 2019 – between $10k and $35k appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

LIST: Andrew’s top 3 picks from SIHH 2019 between $10k and $35k, including Panerai, IWC and Ulysse Nardin

This price bracket is a sweet spot for SIHH and the going gets tough when it comes to picking the standouts. One of the benefits of Felix and I splitting our picks this year is that we can cover more ground.
