BASEL BUILDUP: 3 days to go. The watches of 2016 that nearly brought two Aussies to blows

BASEL BUILDUP: It’s happy families at Time+Tide most of the time. We have our likes, dislikes. But it’s horses for courses, and it’s cool. That said, if there’s any setting that causes a bit of healthy conflict, it’s the Baselworld experience. And by about day four it’s a pressure cooker. This is about when we … ContinuedThe post BASEL BUILDUP: 3 days to go. The watches of 2016 that nearly brought two Aussies to blows appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

BASEL BUILDUP: 4 days to go. The best watches of Baselworld 2016 paired with perfect outfits

BASEL BUILDUP: To celebrate the sartorial whirlwind who sadly departs Time+Tide today on maternity leave, we couldn’t resist revisiting our Content Director Ceri David’s genius idea from Baselworld 2016, which was to basically ‘live pair’ all the new releases with creative wardrobe choices. It was a huge hit with readers, and – looking at the list a … ContinuedThe post BASEL BUILDUP: 4 days to go. BASEL BUILDUP:  Seiko’s impact at Baselworld last year was measurable on the Richter scale. If it wasn’t the aftershocks of the Seiko Presage Chronograph 60th Anniversary Limited Edition it was watches like the Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGD001. Hard model name to remember. Easy watch to be wooed by. The dial doesn’t quite sparkle in these pictures like it does … ContinuedThe post BASEL BUILDUP: 5 days to go. BASEL BUILDUP: 6 days to go. This year is the Omega Speedmaster’s 60th anniversary, so watch this video about the 1957 original

BASEL BUILDUP: The first Omega Speedmaster was released in 1957, so the iconic model is celebrating its 60th this year. We’re pretty confident this means we’ll be seeing an anniversary edition at Baselworld in a few days, which led us to speculate (fairly intensely) about what it might look like. As with all things involving ‘vintage’ and ‘Speedmaster’, … ContinuedThe post BASEL BUILDUP: 6 days to go. BASEL BUILDUP: 8 days to go. Remembering the Rolex that blew up Baselworld 2016…

BASEL BUILDUP: Will it happen again? Will Rolex put a ceramic bezel on an existing watch and break Baselworld? Rumours abound we may see just that on the ‘Coke’ GMT-Master II, which has been mocked up here by those resourceful Rolex rumourmongers at Monochrome. Though, for ours, a gradated green dial on a Sea-Dweller would … ContinuedThe post BASEL BUILDUP: 8 days to go. BASEL BUILDUP: One of the great things about Basel is the interviews. All the key players are in one place, and to use sporting parlance, when the doors open and the cameras roll, it is game on. HOW TO: Make your watch brand go viral, a marketing masterclass by Moser

It’s both reassuring and alarming to discover that H. Moser & Cie. He’s also refreshingly direct and far from complacent about the … ContinuedThe post HOW TO: Make your watch brand go viral, a marketing masterclass by Moser appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Insight: The Geometric Efficiency of Escapements

Mechanical escapements remain the most fascinating and enticing field of horological study even in the 21st century. At its core, an escapement has a simple purpose: restore lost energy to the oscillating organ while regulating the discharge speed of the going train – thus allowing for time measurement. Straightforward as the concept is, executing an escapement well is a completely different affair. The escapement is perhaps the element of the mechanical movement that has undergone the most iterations since its invention. The reason is simple: escapements were, and remain, imperfect systems. In fact, the escapement is often the least efficient aspect of a mechanical movement in terms of energy transfer. That’s why watchmakers and engineers have devised innumerable variants in the search of the ideal escapement.  Explaining escapement efficiency In physics the efficiency of a system is the proportion of useful work done relative to the total work done by said system. The result, measured as a percentage, speaks to the energy conserved within the system. For example, an 80% efficiency means that 20% of the total available energy is lost, with the remaining 80% usefully conserved.  That said, an efficient escapement isn’t necessarily chronometrically-potent, since there are more criteria, apart from energy conservation, which reflect in a movement’s accuracy. The way in which escapement parts impulse to the balance, the proximity of the equilibrium point and the deg...
