This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first Windup Watch Fair, and we are excited to announce that we’ve added a fourth show to the roster taking place for the first time in Dallas, Texas. The Latest From Tactile Turn You know we’re pretty big fans of Tactile Turn’s pens around here, so we definitely wanted to highlight their latest seasonal release. The “Groove” is inspired by a love of music and vinyl record culture. The inky black pen (sorry for the pun) is meant to conjure the grooves of a vinyl record, and it’s paired with an “LP” edition that is a bit bolder and colorful, recalling colored viny and 1970s design cues. Zuck’s New Watch If you’re a watch enthusiast and have spent literally any time at all on the internet this week, you’ve no doubt already heard about Mark Zuckerberg’s latest high end watch, a nearly million dollar Greubel Forsey Handmade 1. Zuckerberg seems to have taken a relatively sudden interest in high end watches, being photographed in watches made by Patek, F.P. Journe, and others. But the Handmade 1 is something in a different league – Gruebel Forsey says each watch takes over 6,000 man hours to produce, and virtually every component is handmade in the traditional, painstaking way. While it might seem ostentatious to wear a watch like this, one has to ask: isn’t someone like Zuckerberg exactly who this watch is made for? Who exactly is supposed to wear million dollar watches if not the world’s billionaires? Devin is a watch industry veteran with a penchant for tool watches, but that doesn’t mean he won’t class the place up a little from time to time, as you’ll see in his three picks below. When Zach Kazan throws down the “pick three for $5,000” challenge gauntlet, you take it up. As a watch enthusiast and collector who has never felt the need to round out a collection but rather trusts a gut instinct, I figured this would be a fun opportunity to boil down what I would look for given the hypothetical. For my picks, I tried to think about what type of watch I wore the most and what those picks said about me. Looking primarily at the manufacturer’s price, I struggled to come up with a variety that spoke to me within the pricing restraints, often wandering too far above the line. So, I will admit that one of these picks is a pre-owned option. With my shame out in the open but integrity intact, let’s take a look at the picks. A New Pack from YETI We’re big fans of both YETI and Mystery Ranch around here, so when it was announced in early 2024 that the former had acquired the latter, it had many of us curious about what the future would hold for the storied backpack brand. Rumors have circulated for months that YETI would be phasing out the Mystery Ranch name, and it looks like a new pack introduced recently could provide a preview of how these brands might live together in the future. His collection consists of three sporty Seikos, but these are all JDM models that differ just slightly (well, sometimes more than slightly) from their counterparts available in the United States, and elsewhere. Collecting JDM Seiko is a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole, and Mark makes a compelling case for why diving into these slightly tougher to obtain Seikos is worth the additional effort. The theme of my $5,000 trio is Neo-Vintage (late 1990’s to early 2000’s) JDM Titanium Seiko’s that cover the gambit of Air, Land, and Sea (prior service U.S. Marine, 2001-2011). While this theme may not be for everyone, there’s a certain level of difficulty in acquiring clean examples of these watches that I must say is extremely gratifying. Much more so than just crunching the numbers and hitting your targets on the new market. You’ll have to do some research, make some connections, and enjoy a lot of insightful back-and-forth while on the hunt for a trio like this. Think niche JDM watch dealers on Instagram. Royal Enfield Introduces the Electric Flying Flea Royal Enfield is the oldest motorcycle brand to still be in production, with a long history of motorcycle production in Great Britain. The brand is now headquartered in India and is said to produce nearly a million motorcycles annually and has operations in more than 60 countries worldwide (with over 800 stores in India alone). In other words, they’re huge. And they’ve just launched a long awaited new product, the Flying Flea, the brand’s first electric motorcycle. There’s a huge demand for electric vehicles worldwide, so it was only a matter of time before Royal Enfield got involved. The name and the design of the bike pay homage to the motorcycles built by the brand during WWII, and were famously dropped from planes with parachutes for use on the ground. They were always conceived as lightweight, go-anywhere vehicles, and that seems to be the spirit with which Royal Enfield has approached this new modern version of the bike. A Big Sale for the Members of Pink Floyd It’s become quite common in recent years for major recording acts to sell the rights to their music and songwriting to giant corporations, generating enormous paydays for the creatives involved, even if it means losing some or all of the control of the content itself. British rock band Pink Floyd is the latest in a growing line of Boomer bands to take an enormous check for their catalog. As the Guardian and others have reported, the deal is worth an estimated $400 million, and gives new owner Sony the rights to the band’s vast catalog, as well as their names and likenesses. The deal comes after years of infighting between members that reportedly slowed down negotiations, and controversial comments from Roger Waters about, well, a whole bunch of things that you can choose to Google if you’d like. What comes next for Pink Floyd and what does the deal mean? Hard to say. They retain the rights to their songwriting, but the deal should allow Sony and others to use their music for any number of commercial purposes. And Sony owns a movie studio...

The Struggling Swiss Watch Industry Reports continue to surface that point to prolonged troubles and a general downturn in the Swiss watch industry. Forbes reports that according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, exports were down in August by 125,000 units year over year, even while the total value of all exports increased by nearly 8%. A chief cause of the downturn, in addition to a slowing global economy, is likely overproduction of watches and other luxury goods. Johann Rupert, chairman of Richemont, called on watch manufacturers to reduce production across the board. It’s worth pointing out that these export numbers never tell the whole story – these are units sold to retailers, not end users, for the most part. But signs seem to be everywhere that the boom seen during the pandemic across the industry has waned significantly, and the industry as a whole may have returned to what once would have been described as normal.
