Gold rush: Three discontinued gold watches you can have for a bargain

Solid gold watches can be wildly expensive, and this is partly why the consumer base largely focuses on stainless-steel references. But those who are willing to do the leg-work can track down some really interesting vintage gold watches that, in the scope of what they offer, can be had for quite a bargain. As a … ContinuedThe post Gold rush: Three discontinued gold watches you can have for a bargain appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Cliff diving with Mido: “You never conquer the fear. You just learn to manage it”

“When you enter the water at that velocity, the impact is severe,” says Eric Brooker, an elite-level diving coach who supervised the judging panel at this year’s Commonwealth Games. “It’s like hitting a bus if you don’t get it right.” What Brooker is talking about here is cliff diving, the death-defying pursuit considered to be … ContinuedThe post Cliff diving with Mido: “You never conquer the fear. “Saddam’s chandelier was the size of a two-car garage,” wrote the late P.J. O’Rourke in a piece on Saddam Hussein’s taste in interior design. “If a reason to invade Iraq was wanted – felony decorating would have done.” It’s this sort of dictator chic that springs to mind when confronted by the maniacal excess of … ContinuedThe post Modified with the dial of a Rolex Daytona, this iPhone is the ideal gift for a lunatic despot. TAG Heuer debuts two Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Editions that fans will race to shell out for

In a sceptical marketplace, collaborations and partnerships can sometimes be met with hesitancy. Not every tie-in is created equal. Is it a gimmick? A cash-grab? If the through-line is not there, if it does not feel genuine, then the release is often set to tank. But the proof is ultimately in the pudding. Last year, … ContinuedThe post TAG Heuer debuts two Formula 1 x Mario Kart Limited Editions that fans will race to shell out for appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

This is the first musical shoutout of Patek Philippe. And no, it’s not hip-hop, it’s prog-rock…

In the world of popular music, Patek references are all over hip hop, with mentions in rhyme from Jay-Z to Migos. But surprisingly, the first lyrical mention of the brand has nothing to do with rap. No, the first time “Patek Philippe” was heard in song comes from a ’70s British progressive rock supergroup finding … ContinuedThe post This is the first musical shoutout of Patek Philippe. We’ve found a sure-fire way to get a Rolex on your wrist (sort of…)

There’s been much hand-wringing of late about the slow death of traditional men’s formalwear. The writing was already on the sartorial wall in 2019 when, for example, British retailer Marks and Spencer slashed their suit and formalwear ranges by 14 per cent while increasing their leisurewear lines by 12 per cent. And then came COVID-19. During … ContinuedThe post We’ve found a sure-fire way to get a Rolex on your wrist (sort of…) appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

In Praise of Anglage: Exceptional Hand-Finished Anglage Is Difficult, Slow, And Expensive So The Big Brands Have Given Up And Few Seem To Have Noticed (Or Seem To Care) - Thank God For The Indies!

Big brands are now making beautiful, reliable, and relatively accurate “traditional” mechanical watches, but the handcrafted work many of us value is disappearing. Highly skilled watchmakers and artisans are rare and expensive: there just aren’t enough of them available to churn out the large quantity of nice watches now being sold. And why bother when nobody seems to have noticed?

Four watches that look great on their own, but are hard to pair with an outfit

There are pretty watches that go with everything, and watches so ugly that they go with nothing. But, how about the watches that are pretty, yet present the nigh impossible challenge of pairing them with an outfit that matches their aesthetic? Inspired by my time with the first entrant on this list, I realised that … ContinuedThe post Four watches that look great on their own, but are hard to pair with an outfit appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The SJX x Kudoke “Zodiac” Nominated for GPHG 2022

The preeminent – and perhaps only international – awards for watchmaking, Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), has just announced the competing timepieces of 2022. We are please that one of own editions, the Kudoke 2 “Zodiac”, is competing in “Artistic Crafts”. Created last year for the 10th anniversary of SJX Watches, the Kudoke 2 “Zodiac” is a candidate alongside marques like Voutilainen and Hermes in a category that calls for “exceptional mastery of one or several artistic techniques such as enamelling, lacquering, engraving, guilloché (engine-turning), skeleton-working, etc.” The Zodiac is all about engraving – done by hand naturally – with both the front and back decorated in relief and textures. Both the dial and movement are fully engraved by the hands of the skilful artisans at Kudoke. The hand engraving is extensive and complete, with is nothing on the dial or movement that is engraved by machine – even the brand name on the dial is executed by hand. But the Zodiac is more than just artisanal technique. It is also an artistic creation: the hour symbols on the dial were commissioned especially for the watch and drawn by Canadian illustrator Lee Yuen-Rapati, who’s now the in-house designer at Fears. He cleverly combined both a sign of the zodiac and Roman numeral into each hour markers. The marker at ten, for instance, is Aquarius but also contains “X”, the Roman numeral for “10”. To echo the celestial theme on the fr...
