The roots of Parmigiani as a brand are in the restoration of complicated watches and clocks from horological history. This remains the passion of founder Michel Parmigiani, who even now, despite the success of the brand, still finds the time to devote himself to the type of restoration projects from which his horological passion came […]

This was the question I was pondering when the Piaget Altiplano 900P was placed in my hands. Piaget of course, are the masters of the Ultra Thin watch, having dedicated themselves to the pursuit of this particular horological niche throughout their history. The brand holds world records for thinness in up to 12 categories, and for this, there is no denying that despite other brands introducing ultra thin watches from time to time, Piaget have shown that their focus has reaped rewards, and also what can be done when a movement, stripped to the bare essentials, can produce a wonder of mechanical beauty.

It’s difficult to generalize about a company with as long a history and as comprehensive a range of technical capacities as Vacheron Constantin, but we can’t help feeling as if this is the year they’ve chosen to make the art of openworked watches their SIHH highlight. It’s a logical thing for them to do; Vacheron […]

The Rolex Submariner, the Omega Seamaster Professional and the Cartier Santos Galbee are classics that are more often than not worn on a bracelet. You’d wonder sometimes if these watches would have been the successes they are now if they had only been offered on a strap. Even more so for watches like the Audemars […]

Straps are often a point of discussion when it comes to watches and especially when it is about vintage time pieces. A good strap and then I do not mean, well made, but good from a style point of view, can add só much to the presence of the watch. Nowadays almost any brand presents […]

The more expensive jewelry and watches become, the more likely that they will spend most of their existence in the secure confinement of a safe. When jewelry-brand Pomellato was founded in 1967 in Milan, it was determined to change this. With a playful approach towards design, combined with traditional craftsmanship, they created collections that where […]

Girard Perregaux: a grand dame of watchmaking. Making beautiful and magnificent watches. GP is famous for their Tourbillon on Three Golden Bridges. But recently, GP shook the horological world at its roots. After centuries of the Swiss Anchor escapement, they came up a new escapement. Constant force escapement. Beautiful, magnificent. Linde Werdelin is not your average Haute Horlogerie brand. Their constant path towards innovation combined with a very personal customer approach has not only let to some amazing watches over the years, but was also resulted in a customer base that would make many other Haute Horlogerie-brands green of envy. The reason for this is […]

In between a dress watch and a sports watch is what the Mayu, Sub Seconds @ Six from independent watchmakers H. Moser & Cie is. A simple looking, but gorgeous mens watch with a plain uncluttered dial. The Mayu is certainly not a new model, but it’s one of those watches that needs to be […]

The Exotourbillon series of watches are the most refined to come out of the Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie –Montblanc’s high end, high complications atelier located in the village of Villeret. The Exotourbillon gets its name from the construction of the 18,000 vph tourbillon that’s the centerpiece of the watch –it has no […]

The HYT watches have been making waves…yes, pun intended…with their hydro mechanical watches since they were first revealed to the horological world. I covered the first in the series, the HYT1 in these pages before. See here, and here. It was a pleasant afternoon with Vincent Perriard, CEO of HYT. These are quite rare timepieces,Read More

For most watch brands it is still a struggle to create high end watches for contemporary ladies. Smaller watches, often set with obligatory diamonds for a so called extra feminine touch, and of course a “handy, because you never have to wind it”-quartz-movement make up the majority of what many brands offer ladies these days. […]

One of the watches that proofed that we are truly living in the Renaissance of the mechanical watch was Experiment ZR012 from C3H5N3O9. This joint-venture of Urwerk and MB&F; took high end watchmaking even a step further than we are accustomed of these already revolutionary brands. Main focal point in this piece de resistance is […]

I sat down with long-time friend of REVOLUTION Maximilian Büsser this morning to experience something that quite a few of us in this industry have been anticipating for some time now. Carl F. Bucherer has been retailing watches since 1919, and in 2008, the firm introduced its own manufacture calibre, the CFB A1000 self-winding movement –one of the very few automatic movements in production powered by a peripheral rotor. For many enthusiasts, the CFB A1000 movement and its variants are the cornerstone of the Bucherer watch […]

For many years IWC has held steadfastly to its motto, “Engineered for Men” and its instrument watches have garnered the lion’s share of attention. There’s another side to the firm, though, that’s expressed in the Portofino wristwatches. The Portofino collection got its start in the early 1980s and the ur Portofino is of course the famous ref. There’s always an undeniable pleasure in seeing rare watches, and for the Revolution team, a recent invitation by Harry Winston to see some of their latest pieces was simply irresistible. Rusted steel from the Titanic, erupting vulcano’s, PacMan; they all featured Romain Jerome’s watches. So what took them so long to use diamonds on their watches in the general collection, especially since they have created some commissioned diamond set watches before? Probably because diamonds are too common for a brand that always seem to take […]
