As decades march on, no conflict has captured and maintained as much attention globally as World War II. Sure, that sounds like a dry opening statement for an AP History exam, but it’s hard to deny the pervasive influence of WWII on world culture, national identity, and yes, even horology. Eighty years on, we keep making movies about the conflict, keeping the 1940s and its aesthetic surprisingly prime in the cultural zeitgeist. Jimmy is one of those movies, due in theaters in November, and featuring a smattering of real Bulova timepieces from the period, courtesy of the brand’s museum. In celebration of the iconic Type A-11 watch that Bulova provided to the United States military starting in 1942, a re-release called the Jimmy A-11 Hack is ready for deployment. I have long been a fan of mil-spec field watches, though not because I am some sort of military history buff or avid outdoor enthusiast. No, the main appeal for me—and I think for many folks, especially non-watch nerds—is the simplicity. No date window, no chronograph subdials, no functions other than the absolutely vital. It’s kind of refreshing in 2026 to wear a purpose-built piece of machinery that does one thing very, very well, and a classic field watch is the epitome of that catharsis. Earlier this week, we tackled two of the four auctions taking place in Geneva this week (and into next). Now we tackle the last two—Phillips and Sotheby's—which will round out to around 1200 watches that I’ll have looked at to consider for coverage. Have I missed some deals? Certainly. Audemars Piguet’s latest releases continue its embrace of the stone dial trend while revisiting one of the brand’s signature complications. The Code 11.59 Selfwinding 38 mm gains a pair of mineral stone dials in gold obsidian and onyx, while the Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie returns in titanium and, for the first time, 18k pink gold. Completing the line-up is the Code 11.59 Minute Repeater Supersonnerie, now in 18k white gold with a smoked sapphire dial that reveals the striking mechanics of the cal. 2953. All five watches are variations of established models, with the changes concentrated on materials, colours, and dial finishes. But there is variety within the familiar formats, particularly among the repeaters. Initial thoughts Audemars Piguet’s latest releases represent selections from near the top and bottom of the brand’s model hierarchy, updated in terms of materials and colour. In this sense, none of the new models are particularly surprising, especially considering the brand’s ongoing rollout of watches with natural stone dials. The mineral-and-baguette format of the pink gold 38 mm Code 11.59, for example, mirrors that of two 41 mm models launched previously with malachite and sodalite dials. It’s time to dig in for the fall auction season, and with over 1225 lots, I must admit I've delayed this out of sheer overwhelming anxiety about the amount of work to do. Also, aside from a small preview of watches held by Phillips in New York a few weeks back, I haven’t had time to handle these watches, which increasingly leaves me unnerved as prices rise and audiences become more educated. It allows folks to pick out details you just can’t notice when looking at hundreds of watches but can find if you look at one or two watches closely, which I don’t have the luxury of. Caveat emptor, as always, but I’ll be going to some previews in Geneva next week, and I will update if I notice anything. In case you missed it, Ben covered some things he noticed for these same auctions, which led to me crossing out some things I was going to cover (since he beat me to it) and to send him a bit of a lamenting text saying that he blew up my spot on a few things I was going to bid on. One of the brands we don’t talk about all that often here is Arnold & Son. It’s a brand that offers an interesting heritage story—Swiss watchmaking with English roots, as the brand proudly headlines on its website in homage to eighteenth-century watchmaker John Arnold. It sits within the Citizen Group as one of the brand’s prestige properties, along with Angelus, and both are led by Pascal Béchu. Many people may be surprised to find out that the Citizen Group’s portfolio extends quite a bit out of Japan, with other familiar names like Bulova, Frederique Constant, Alpina, and La-Joux Perret as key properties, but Arnold & Son stands out mostly due to its price point and complicated high horology offerings. A little over two weeks ago, in time for WatchTime NY, Arnold & Son introduced a new update to the brand’s DSTB models—the new DSTB Stop-Seconds limited editions in Cliff Grey and Kingsand. Both are limited to 18 pieces each. On the surface, they might look just like new dial and metal combinations for the pre-existing DSTB (Dial-Side True Beat) references, but these new editions get a pretty major upgrade—hacking functionality for the deadbeat seconds. Hacking seconds might not seem like an update worthy of celebration, but for a watch that puts so much emphasis on the seconds hand, it is a welcome sight. Porsche x La Marzocco 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Collection It’s well established that I’m not a car guy. And it’s also well established that I have the palate of my Midwestern forebears, meaning gas station coffee is just fine by me, thank you very much. But when it comes to design, I’m a bit of a snob, looking to both Porsche and La Marzocco as the pinnacles of who I’d want to be, had life and a trust fund turned out differently for me. Put those two together and – mein Gott – all I can say is mamma mia. The two brands are teaming up for a second time, this time taking inspiration from the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7. The centerpiece is a limited-edition version of La Marzocco’s Linea Micra espresso machine, available in historic Porsche color combinations including Grand Prix White and Green and Tangerine and Black. Carrera RS lettering, the historic Porsche logo and a cup rail shaped after the car’s famous ducktail spoiler carry the reference through the machine. There’s also a matching Pico grinder, along with a smaller collection of coffee accessories and apparel in the same RS 2.7 colors. The collection is available now through Porsche’s online store with prices ranging from $59 to, ahem, $7, 911. What We Know Steampunk and industrial-inspired watches are definitely seeing an uptick in certain collecting circles right now. Look no further than the dramatic rise in, and recent secondary-market sale prices for, Ōtsuka Lōtec pieces from Japan. But when it comes to steampunk retro-futurist horology, Vianney Halter is undoubtedly the pioneer and O.G. Halter's original Antiqua, a perpetual calendar conceived with American graphic designer Jeff Barnes and introduced to the public in 1998, is an immensely important work in the history of modern independents. Through influences including science fiction - films, TV, and literature - and most notably the French writer Jules Verne, Halter established his own unique design codes in a collection of timepieces that came to be called "Futur Antérieur” - the French tense for 'what will have happened' or, rather, looking forward while drawing on aesthetics and industrial designs of the past. Still ensconced in his Swiss atelier, the French-born Halter continues to produce extraordinary watches under his own name, but has also been particularly active in collaborating with a host of brands and fellow watchmakers in recent years.
