Straum

Straum is a Norwegian independent watchmaker founded by designer and watch enthusiast Jonas Nesland. The design brief is specific: build sports watches whose visual vocabulary is drawn from Norwegian nature rather than from the Swiss watchmaking canon. Dial textures reference basalt columns, fjord water and volcanic geography; case shapes lean into the utilitarian tool-watch tradition without adopting any of the specific Swiss-icon silhouettes.

The brand's most-recognised reference is the Jan Mayen dive watch, named after the volcanic island in the Norwegian Sea. It anchors a small catalogue of sports references that pair Swiss automatic movements (Sellita, Miyota depending on tier) with Straum-designed dials, cases and straps. The atelier is small on purpose: production runs are numbered, distribution is direct-to-consumer through the brand's own site, and the roadmap advances through carefully-spaced references rather than annual mass releases.
