Vostok (Russian: Восток, "East") was founded in 1942 in Chistopol, Tatarstan, Russia, when the Soviet government evacuated the First Moscow Watch Factory eastward during the German advance toward Moscow in WWII. The Chistopol facility continued production of military and civilian watches throughout the war and was formally established as the Chistopol Watch Factory after the war's end.
Through the 1950s and 1960s Chistopol produced civilian Soviet wristwatches under various names; the firm became globally recognised in 1965 when it began production of the Komandirskie, the Soviet Ministry of Defence's standard-issue military watch for command-grade officers. The Komandirskie became the Red Army's standard-issue mechanical watch through the late 1980s and is still continuously produced today.
Vostok's most-cited dive watch is the Amfibia, launched in 1967 as the Soviet answer to the Rolex Submariner. The Amfibia was specified by the Soviet Navy and required to function at 200 m water resistance using a novel compression-fit caseback design that became more water-tight under increasing pressure (rather than less, as conventional gasket designs tend to fail). The Amfibia was used by Soviet naval divers and remains continuously produced; modern Amfibia references retail at approximately $100-$300.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Chistopol factory was reorganised as Vostok Watch Makers (joint-stock company). The firm continues independent operations today, producing the Komandirskie, Amfibia, Generalskie, and various heritage-themed references. Total annual production is in the high hundreds of thousands of mechanical watches.
The Vostok caliber family, 2414 (manual-wind), 2416B (automatic), 2426/2428 (date variants), is one of the most produced mechanical watch movement families in the world; total production since 1965 is in the multi-tens-of-millions range. Vostok\'s combination of affordability (~$50-$300 retail), genuine mechanical-watch heritage, and military provenance makes it the canonical entry point for serious mechanical watch collecting.
