What titanium does
Titanium is ~40% lighter than steel at similar density-corrected strength. The material is hypoallergenic (no nickel reactions), corrosion-resistant in seawater, and has a distinctive grey-tone surface that doesn't reflect light the same way as steel. The downside: standard grade-2 titanium scratches more easily than steel; grade-5 (Ti-6Al-4V alloy) is harder.
Tudor and Citizen dominate the under-€5k tier; AP, Panerai, and Grand Seiko hold the high end. Most modern dive watches now offer titanium variants.

Why buy titanium over steel?
Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than 316L steel by volume, hypoallergenic, and better at scratch resistance in grade 2 and grade 5. The Tudor Pelagos 39 in titanium wears meaningfully lighter than the steel BB58 at similar case size. For big or thick watches, titanium changes the wearing experience.
Is titanium harder to scratch than steel?
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium is harder than 316L steel and does resist scratches better in like-for-like conditions. Grade 2 (commercial pure) titanium scratches more easily than steel but polishes back easier too. Sinn's Tegimented titanium (surface hardened) is significantly harder than any steel case.
Which titanium watch is the best value?
The Citizen Promaster Titanium Dive at around 700 euro is the accessible entry. The Sinn U50 in submarine steel (not titanium but similar weight) at 2,700 euro is the tool-watch alternative. Tudor Pelagos 39 at 4,600 euro is the mid-tier consensus titanium dive answer.
Does the AP Royal Oak Titanium justify 40,000 euro?
For the buyer who wants a lighter Royal Oak, yes. The AP Royal Oak Titanium wears meaningfully lighter than the steel 15500ST and reads more subtle (matte grey vs polished steel). Retail sits at similar levels to the steel version but availability is easier because the demand is more collector-directed.
