The Nodus Story

Wes Kwok and Cullen Chen founded Nodus in Los Angeles in 2017. Both had backgrounds in enthusiast watch collecting rather than industry experience, and they conceived the brand as an accessible, value-focused sports-watch line designed in California with production partnerships in Asia. The founding premise was a specific enthusiast complaint: that sub-USD-1,000 watches were often either poorly-specified fashion pieces or indistinct microbrand revivals, and that a serious Californian design sensibility could fill the gap.

The first reference was the Retrospect (2017), a retro-inspired dress-sport watch with Sellita SW200 automatic and traditional dress proportions. The Sector Series followed as the brand's commercial breakthrough: a modern 38mm steel sports watch with a distinctive sector dial (a dial divided into concentric rings with different patterns or finishes for minutes, seconds, and indices). Subsequent references include the Avalon (dive watch), the Sector Dive (dive-watch variant of the Sector Series), and the Trieste (field-watch).

Movements are typically Seiko NH35 (for accessible references) or Miyota 9015 (for higher-tier references), with some Swiss Sellita variants in the upper-tier collection. Cases are produced in Asia to Nodus specifications with final regulation and quality control in Los Angeles, a differentiator from pure overseas-produced microbrands. Retail runs from approximately USD 400 (Sector Sport NH35) to USD 800 (Sector Dive Sellita) and USD 1,200+ for limited-edition or titanium variants.

Nodus has grown steadily since 2017 and has built a genuine enthusiast following in the US, UK, and Australian markets. Distribution is direct-to-consumer through the Nodus website plus a small number of US retailer partners. The brand has participated in several notable collaborations (Hodinkee, Worn & Wound) and has consistently maintained its sub-USD-1,000 positioning rather than drifting into more expensive segments. Annual production is in the low thousands; Kwok and Chen remain co-founders and sole owners.
