Paul Schwarz-Etienne founded the firm in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1902, initially as a component and dial supplier to the broader Swiss watch industry. Through the first half of the 20th century Schwarz-Etienne operated as an OEM supplier, producing dials, hands, cases, and occasionally complete movements for other brands. The firm remained profitable through the quartz crisis primarily because of its OEM business; when finished-watch brands collapsed, suppliers like Schwarz-Etienne continued producing components.
In 1997 the firm was revived as a branded watchmaker, with Schwarz Etienne-branded wristwatches launched into the market. The brand grew slowly through the 2000s and 2010s, establishing a quiet reputation for hand-finished dress watches without the marketing intensity of larger competitors. In 2014 Schwarz Etienne launched the SE-CM01, an in-house manufacture calibre with a micro-rotor, 86-hour power reserve, and extensive hand-decoration on the movement bridges and plates.
The SE-CM01 calibre became commercially significant beyond Schwarz Etienne's own collection. Ming adopted the SE-CM01 for its upper-tier 17-series and 27-series references; Massena LAB has used Schwarz Etienne movements in select collaborations; and other independent brands use Schwarz Etienne dial production for particularly demanding patterns. Schwarz Etienne's dual role as brand + OEM supplier is unusual in the modern Swiss industry (most brands either produce only for themselves or operate as pure component suppliers) and gives the firm a technical depth uncommon at its size.
The Schwarz Etienne branded collection includes the Roma Synergy (integrated-bracelet sports watch), the Ode 1902 (dress piece commemorating the founding year), the Tortue (classical cushion), and the Vadym (tonneau references). All use the SE-CM01 or derivative calibres, with case finishing and dial work executed entirely in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Retail runs from approximately CHF 15,000 (Ode 1902 steel) to CHF 35,000 (Tortue rose gold) and CHF 60,000+ for tourbillon references. Annual production of branded Schwarz Etienne pieces is in the hundreds; OEM production is larger but not disclosed.
