SJX Podcast: In Conversation with Anthony de Haas

On episode 56 of the SJX Podcast, SJX speaks with Anthony de Haas, A. Lange & Söhne’s longtime head of product development, about the thinking behind the watches. The starting point is the new Datograph Perpetual, which takes a familiar model in an unexpected direction with a platinum bracelet and discreet diamond indices. The conversation explores the collaborative watchmaking culture in Glashütte and why every new release should bring something different. Mr de Haas also explains how Lange retains the character of a small manufacture within Richemont — an approach that has earned it the reputation of being “the biggest independent”. Other topics include the growing attention paid to finishing, the work required to give movements a recognisable aesthetic, and why collector enthusiasm won’t necessarily translate into more watches or more bracelets. Just Because: How To Spend $250 At Windup New York

Windup Watch Fair has become a mainstay of New York Watch Week and one of the biggest gatherings on the city’s watch calendar, bringing thousands of watch enthusiasts together each year. Now in its eleventh edition, the fair continues to grow, with more than 160 brands (including Baltic, Brew, Sinn, and Oris) participating this year. The 2026 edition marked Windup’s third year at Center415 on Fifth Avenue, where the venue once again gave visitors the opportunity to interact with and shop from a mix of independent and established watch brands — with a handful of tech, outdoor gear, and travel brands thrown into the mix (including Ad Patina, a fan-favorite that sells historic print ads from iconic watchmakers). With free admission, Windup offers an accessible way for both longtime collectors and curious newcomers to experience the industry in person, making it no surprise that it's the world's largest public watch fair. This year, we of course wanted to check out the show, but we also decided to add a little competition to the mix. Our Editor-in-Chief, James Stacey, and Deputy Editor, Tim Jeffreys, went head-to-head to see who could make the most of a $250 budget at the fair. With plenty of watches, straps, fun gadgets, and other items to choose from, each had to decide how best to spend their money. Watch the video and let us know in the comments who had the best haul. Insight: Modern Escapement Developments Part I

Mechanical escapements have long captured the hearts of enthusiasts and the minds of watchmakers tasked with improving them. Escapement development remains a steady leitmotif throughout the horological industry, even though novel escapements are only launched seldomly.  But there’s been a flurry of activity recently. Just last year, Rolex unveiled a proprietary silicon escapement and Breguet launched a highly advanced magnetic Swiss lever, revealing a glimpse of the exciting research and development work that’s being done by the industry’s leading industrial powerhouses.  The most radical take on the Swiss lever, Breguet’s magnetic constant force escapement. At the other end of the spectrum, we see more and more independent watchmakers going to great lengths to develop new escapements or provide fresh takes on history’s lesser known variants. Smaller players are naturally more resource-constrained, and their results tend to be rooted in traditional manufacturing techniques. That said, clever independents retain the capacity to produce surprising innovations.  This two-part series offers a comprehensive look at the major escapement innovations of the last few decades, which range from products of industrial technology to innovations championed by craftsmen. We begin by examining classical escapement designs that would have been familiar to past generations, which have been modernised to suit the demands of the wristwatch. Natural escapement Between the dominanc...
