BaselWorld 2014: Belles of the Fair: Girard-Perregaux Tri-Axial Tourbillion

The Tourbillion is a complication that was created to optimize precision in timekeeping. Girard-Perregaux has always produced some of the most beautiful tourbillons, and this year, they upped the ante to further this feat, through the use of a Tri-Axial Tourbillion. The Tourbillion, a mechanism that was initially created by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, is used toRead More

In Plain Sight: Revealing The Secrets Of F. P. Journe’s Resonance Chronometer

This story is something of a mea culpa. Many years ago, when I was yet green with youth and correspondingly filled with overweening self-confidence, an independent watchmaker –a respected one; a student of the work of such luminaries as Janvier and Breguet –named Francois Paul Journe, came out with a most intriguing watch. That watch was […]

Baselworld 2014: Blancpain Carrousel Phases de Lune - The Sophistication Of Signature Complications United In Elegance

Ever since the resurrection of Blancpain by Biver and Piguet in the 1980’s, the moon has played an important part in the history of the brand. Their first full calendar model with moon phase was a classical beauty, whose legacy lives on until today. The same can be said for the carrousel (karrussel) that Blancpain […]

Baselworld 2014: The Hermès Dressage L’Heure Masquée Continues The Art Of The Whimsical Complication (Video)

There’s something beautiful about whimsical complications, the kind that purposely disregards the utilitarian function of a watch: that of telling time, in order to make a statement. Like the well regarded Hermès Arceau Le Temps Suspendu, the new Dressage L’Heure Masquée (literally “Time Hidden”) from the same brand continues their somewhat playful obsession, that of making the […]

The Depths of Understanding - History of the Rolex Sea-Dweller

There’s something about a dive watch that emanates an unassailable image of unabashed cool. We’re talking Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane jamming in ice underpants cool. Maybe it has to do with the rakish élan perpetuated by 007 pairing his white dinner jacket with the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 on a Nato strap. You could easily imagine him shucking shantung and diving into the sea to demolish the assembled forces of SMERSCH with nothing more than a sharpened clamshell, a bevy of torpedo-chested lady friends and his trusty dive watch. But it also has to do with the total veracity and slavish devotion to function embodied by these timepieces. After all, these were tools that soldiers and civilians alike literally depended on with their very lives.

In Pursuit Of The Holy Grail Watch: Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak 5402 A Series Yellow Gold

There’s a lot of postulation as to why suddenly a whole new generation of watch collectors, myself included, have become so fixated with vintage watches. To me, the charm of an over-half-a-century-old Rolex GMT or a nearly-40-year-old Patek Nautilus Ref. 3700/1A is that when you strap it to your wrist, you realize that, while time […]

Suitably decorated, the Roger Dubuis stand at SIHH featured life-size watchmakers, each holding a bell jar containing a watch from the Hommage Collection. These represented watchmakers from the past who, in large and […]
