What We Know Cabot Watch Company (better known as CWC) has launched a new take on its classic military-spec dive watch, this time inspired by some of the earliest watches CWC supplied to the British Ministry of Defense. The result is the CWC Navy Eighty CD-1 Diver, which blends one of the most sought-after and rare early CWC unit watches with a host of modern updates to make for a compelling — and spec-heavy — take on a classic formula. At a high level, this latest release from CWC is not a radical departure from previous CWC offerings. You still get the familiar (and wonderful) 41mm fixed-bar Royal Navy Diver case, with its shrouded crown, chunky rounded lugs, and broad, grippy bezel. You also still get the familiar dial layout originally prescribed by the MOD for watches in the 1950s, plus a handful of vintage-inspired details that help the watch stand apart from the standard Royal Navy Diver available today. These include a handset as close as I’ve seen to the original 1980 CWC-issued divers, including the diamond-tipped luminous seconds hand (a feature largely replaced over the years by a Speedmaster-style teardrop second’s hand) and an old-school, non-serif, non-oval CWC logo. There are big changes here, but they largely come down to finishing and material choices. Just 18 mph. The pace of a pygmy hippopotamus at full chat, a sidewinder snake late for a meeting, a badger sprinting for the bus or, apparently, a Tyrannosaurus Rex in pursuit of a YJ Jeep Wrangler. That's how fast, or rather slow, I'm trying to drive down this narrow lane in the heat of competition. Yet, as the little red Alfa Romeo meticulously meanders its way through a calm corner of Cotswolds countryside, a drop of blood trickling along a grey artery between yellow sun-baked wheat fields, there is real tension inside the car. It might not be fast and furious, but this is not slow and soporific either. The concentration is palpable in the cabin. Sweat is forming on brows, and it's only partly because of a lack of air conditioning. In the navigator's seat is Matt Dereve (@SoulSpec), who is doing a valiant job of juggling directional diagrams, distances, and a stopwatch, while I try to heed his instructions and match them to the needle on the Veglia dial. Watches for ELA, a charity auction benefiting ELA International, will take place as part of the Christie’s Rare Watches sale in Geneva on Monday, November 9. The sale comprises 21 lots, all unique or one-of-a-kind pieces from a range of brands and independent watchmakers. ELA International brings together seven ELA associations across Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, and Switzerland) and has been fighting leukodystrophies since the 1990s. These rare, severe genetic neurodegenerative diseases attack the central nervous system, causing profound disability and early death in both children and adults. Proceeds will fund medical research and support affected patients and families. The first charity watch sale, held at Christie’s in 2024, raised close to $1 million. I know there's all sorts of consequential stuff happening, and the GPHG winners are announced tomorrow, but we're currently witnessing an exceptional musical run. I mentioned Twisted Teens in August, at which point they'd released their second excellent album of the year, but today sees the release of The Holy Cross Tigers, their incredible third album of 2026 and Sub Pop debut. Please note that the quality isn't dropping across releases, and please also note this is the band's fourth album total. I won’t pretend I’m the poster child for an active, outdoorsy lifestyle. I’m definitely what some would call a “ball sport” person, and if there aren’t team colors and regional rivalries, I am unlikely to participate. My mom, though, is an avid paddleboarder and hiker, so when I am presented with watches like those from the new Praesidus Montar collection, I try to keep her and her fellow outdoorspeople in mind. Founded in 2019 and inspired by veterans and service members, Praesidus (which means “protector” in Latin) have filled out their lineup with rugged styling and function-first practicality. The new Montar collection doesn’t deviate from that goal, but elevates the sport-factor to new levels by appealing to recreational outdoor enthusiasts rather than taking the more action-oriented military approach. Two models are available: the Ranger Ana-Digi and GMT. The Ana-Digi takes a go at the ever-popular, eponymous format, combining a rotating compass bezel, digital time and date display, and standard 12-hour indices and hands to appeal to the outdoor crowd. The styling isn’t too far off from popular G-SHOCKs, though Praesidus adds their own spin with prominent bezel markings and indicators, which illuminate along with the hands. The stainless steel case and bezel are a matte black, with the watch measuring in at 44mm in diameter, making it by no means a dainty piece. After more than two decades manufacturing components at Patek Philippe and independently for client brands, Jean-Marc Fleury has begun applying that expertise to watches bearing his own name. His latest is the JM Fleury Chronograph Openwork, which pairs a titanium case with sapphire dial elements that reveal the finely finished calibre within. Inside is the manufacture’s own FM04, a hand-wound chronograph that takes inspiration from the Lemania 2310 while refining its architecture and enlarging it for contemporary proportions. Initial thoughts The prevailing emphasis on elaborate movement finishing explains the concept behind the JM Fleury Chronograph Openwork. With collectors seemingly laser-focused on mirror-polished steel and gleaming bevels, independent watchmakers are increasingly turning to inverted architectures and transparent dials to bring more of their work to the surface. Like the chronographs of Petermann Bédat and Rexhep Rexhepi, the Chronograph Openwork stops short of all-out skeletonisation, opting instead for a selectively open-worked main plate visible through sapphire crystal dial elements. The result strikes a balance: enough of the main plate remains intact to give the dial a (mostly) coherent backdrop, while the openings expand the visible canvas for decoration. As decades march on, no conflict has captured and maintained as much attention globally as World War II. Sure, that sounds like a dry opening statement for an AP History exam, but it’s hard to deny the pervasive influence of WWII on world culture, national identity, and yes, even horology. Eighty years on, we keep making movies about the conflict, keeping the 1940s and its aesthetic surprisingly prime in the cultural zeitgeist. Jimmy is one of those movies, due in theaters in November, and featuring a smattering of real Bulova timepieces from the period, courtesy of the brand’s museum. In celebration of the iconic Type A-11 watch that Bulova provided to the United States military starting in 1942, a re-release called the Jimmy A-11 Hack is ready for deployment. I have long been a fan of mil-spec field watches, though not because I am some sort of military history buff or avid outdoor enthusiast. No, the main appeal for me—and I think for many folks, especially non-watch nerds—is the simplicity. No date window, no chronograph subdials, no functions other than the absolutely vital. It’s kind of refreshing in 2026 to wear a purpose-built piece of machinery that does one thing very, very well, and a classic field watch is the epitome of that catharsis. What We Know Louis Vuitton is adding a new material to its Tambour Convergence collection with the introduction of the Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel. The Tambour collection, first introduced in 2002, takes its name from the French word for “drum,” referencing the case's drum-shaped profile. In 2025, the brand expanded the line with the Tambour Convergence, marking an important milestone as its first guichet-style watch conceived entirely at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Now, after several precious-metal and artisanal interpretations, the latest model trades gold and platinum for hardened stainless steel, making it more practical for everyday wear and bringing it in at a lower price point than its predecessors. Measuring 37mm across and 8mm thick, the Tambour Convergence is made from a proprietary hardened stainless steel. The watch’s defining feature is its mirror-polished finish—extending across the case, lugs, and crown—achieved through a patented treatment that also increases its surface hardness by nearly six times, reaching a hardness rating of 1,130 Vickers. This makes it more resistant to surface scratches than ordinary steel. French microbrand Serica has toiled since 2019 to create an aesthetic that makes their watches instantly recognizable—rounded design elements with precise proportions, even wildly varying models like their field watch, diver, and stadium-shaped Parade contain unifying hallmarks: carefully considered dial balance, 1970s-esque styling, and prominent bezel designs all signal a Serica timepiece. Over the past seven years, they’ve continued to refine their watches from a mechanical standpoint, too, introducing complications and added robustness to withstand tool watch duties. The 8315 line of GMT models is perhaps their most function-forward design, first debuting in 2022. Like most Serica watches, it favors a cleanly balanced dial, meaning no date function—ideal for a travel watch, which is the intended use of the 8315, earning it the “Travel Chronometer” name. Now, Serica unveils a slick new colorway for the popular model: Golden Green. The 8315-3 Golden Green doesn’t purport to be a grand deviation from the Travel Chronometer formula.
