Finishing encompasses a variety of techniques. The application of traditional Genevan/Swiss-style finishing is not unlike writing a sonnet: there is a very particular, strict form you have to follow, but within that form, you are free to express yourself to the limits of your skill and taste. The basic vocabulary includes anglage, or the bevelling […]

I assembled the new Panerai movement the other day. I wish there was a way to rephrase that sentence so I could accurately convey how challenging I found it to be. To be absolutely fair, it was at the end of a long week. You may think that Watches & Wonders is more chilled out […]

Tudor was founded by none other than the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, in 1946 to be an affordable alternative to Rolex, using the parent company’s cases but fitting them with third-party movements to keep prices lower. With a few exceptions, the early Tudor watches largely mimicked Rolex models, and even sometimes bore the Rolex […]

The basic idea behind the tourbillon is to take the escapement and put it in a mechanically driven mount (or a group of nested mounts, in the case of the family of orbital tourbillons) in order to create a single average rate in all the vertical positions - and in many instances, to create a […]

A. Lange & Söhne releases the Saxonia Moonphase at the recent SIHH 2016. As fervent fans of moonphase timepieces, this piece spiked our interest. Lange's specialty German engineering and age perfected finishing art are all evident in this timepiece. A notable Lange signature to the otherwise predictable moonphase layout is the large date display at 12, above the brand inscription. The famous outsize date is a style-defining facet of A. Lange & Söhne watches. It was first showcased in 1994, together with the SAXONIA model.

The technical and aesthetic challenges that have to be surmounted in crafting a fine tourbillon are reasons why they are especially prized. One very basic problem, is power. Mainsprings should be kept as weak as possible in order to reduce wear, but they need to be powerful enough to deliver sufficient energy to keep the […]

The Ulysse Nardin Freak arrived at the beginning of the 21st century and was by far the most radical reinterpretation of the wristwatch since wristwatches had first started to be worn over a century before. The mechanical renaissance had at that point been well underway for over a decade, but wristwatch design, with very few […]

Montblanc released the Heritage Chronométrie Collection Twincounter Date at SIHH 2016. This watch spiked our attention because of its utilitarian design and understated beauty. It stands out from the usual time and date wristwatch primarily because of its reinterpreted dial. While not excruciatingly obvious, the unusual subdial positioning of the seconds counter juxtaposed with a larger date subdial is what makes this watch so exciting to us.

SIHH 2016 can hardly be said to be spectacular nor lackluster. As usual, we see some brands go on a decline with questionable releases, and some which we applaud loudly on the stands and in our hearts. The 5 pieces that I have selected are from some of the brands that I have been a fan of for quite some time now.

Last year, H. Moser CEO made a cheeky poke at the Smart Watch genre with their pre-Basel sneak peak announcement that they too will be in the game. As is the trend now for so many brands with model-rich histories - think Cartier, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre - “re-booting” a different range has become an annual activity. IWC is part of that tradition, having in recent years relaunched, for example, the Portofino and Portuguieser families. To the delight of a swathe of IWC devotees, this […]

The question “What makes a women’s watch” is about as easy to answer as the question “What makes a woman”. In other words, there isn’t an answer, unless we stick to the naïve methods of differentiating by external, biological or anatomical terms. Now, we are intelligent, sentient beings whose personalities transcend the limits of gender. […]
