My 5 favourite watches of the last 12 months

Editor’s note: Sometimes you want an informed opinion. You have a problem with your knee – you speak to a doctor. You urgently need to get bail after some unfortunate “misunderstanding” lands you in jail – you put a call into your trusty lawyer. But if you want to get a subjective overview of the … ContinuedThe post My 5 favourite watches of the last 12 months appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Testing a watch-protection sticker kit: Is it like living with a plastic cover on your sofa?

Back in September 2019, during my visit to Australia’s first Watchfest, I happened to win a RX-8 watch protection sticker kit. Whilst I was aware that there were such protection kits out there, at the time I never really thought that they would be for me.  Just like the old image of plastic covers over lounge … ContinuedThe post Testing a watch-protection sticker kit: Is it like living with a plastic cover on your sofa? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Audemars Piguet Unveils the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked

Implemented in models across Audemars Piguet’s catalogue, the tourbillon has been found in the Royal Oak since 1997, though it’s only recently that the model got a major upgrade with the automatic flying tourbillon introduced last year. Audemars Piguet has now taken the covers off its skeletonised sibling, the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked (ref. 26735). The new model is equipped with the brand-new cal. 2792, an automatic movement that’s modern in both aesthetics and construction, with thoughtful details that are typical of Audemars Piguet’s approach to movement construction. The cal. 2792 with the Royal Oak 50th anniversary rotor that’ll be available only during 2022 Initial thoughts The new Royal Oak tourbillon is interesting for its modern aesthetics, particularly in terms of the movement. Despite being a decades-old design, the Royal Oak tourbillon manages to be original in style thanks in part to the calibre. But the movement is more than just a styling exercise. It incorporates several details that are cleverly engineered, which speaks to the watchmaker’s effort in making timepieces that are rooted in contemporary watchmaking concepts. Even though skeletonised watches are neither new nor rare, the exposed mechanics are still intriguing, allowing geeks to connect the dots between the visible parts on the front and back. And as is typical of AP skeleton movements, the cal. 2972 is finished in a manner that is very much modern haute ho...

The Time+Tide Weekend Watch Crossword: #1 Complications

One Sunday morning, I was sitting on the couch having a New York Times mini-crossword race with my brother. It was a pretty close battle, luck of the prompts really, where he got caught up on one of the clues allowing me to come from behind and complete it before him. But in the silent … ContinuedThe post The Time+Tide Weekend Watch Crossword: #1 Complications appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Review: new- Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin 16202ST

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo" Extra-Thin is possibly the grail watch for many stainless steel sports watch collectors. In terms of execution, nothing has changed, and if any, it has only gotten better. The new in-house movement is potentially a significant improvement for stability, performance and accuracy. That said, the discontinuation of the older 15202ST with the caliber 2121 has only made the older model much more collectible. The watch retails at USD$33,200, but is hard if not impossible to find at MSRP.

WHO TO FOLLOW: The horologically centered art of @dianaevansillustration

Imagine flipping a switch and entering a cartoon world where you were the main character. Any limitations that you would normally place on yourself would disappear. One day you’d go skydiving while the next, you’d kayak the Nile. However, even in this fantasy world, your passions would still shine through (I would make sure my … ContinuedThe post WHO TO FOLLOW: The horologically centered art of @dianaevansillustration appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

5 sleeper hits from Tissot that you need to consider

Having worked for Tissot selling their watches for two years before joining the T+T team, I’d like to think that I have a comprehensive grasp of their offering. Purchasing trends were easily noticeable during that time, but what was also apparent is that some great watches were criminally overlooked. With models such as the PRX … ContinuedThe post 5 sleeper hits from Tissot that you need to consider appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Why do brands give their new watches such dumb names?

Sometimes I encounter a watch that makes me think of Kim Jong-il. Let me explain. With more than 1,200 official titles, the North Korean dictator boasted more aliases than the average member of the Wu-Tang Clan. These included “Guardian Deity Of The Planet”, “Ever-Victorious General”, “Lodestar of the 21st Century”, “Eternal Bosom of Hot Love” … ContinuedThe post Why do brands give their new watches such dumb names? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
