HANDS-ON: Ready for anything - the Seiko Astron SSE170J1

Seiko’s Astron (the new GPS one, not the groundbreaking quartz one) is a pretty incredible piece of kit. Ostensibly, it tells the time, day, date and a second time zone. But the trick is in the method. The Astron, thanks to GPS technology, keeps track of time by talking to satellites - a quite cool … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Ready for anything – the Seiko Astron SSE170J1 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: The Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi (ref. 126710 BLRO)

Anticipation was high for a GMT-Master II release at Basel 2018; however, almost everyone in the business of speculating was predicting a rival carbonated beverage with near certainty, since the Pepsi flavour was already representing the solid white gold variant of the Rolex traveller’s watch. I can only imagine their surprise when the hall gates … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi (ref. 126710 BLRO) appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: The SBGE215G -  the Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT in titanium

It’s fair to say that much of Grand Seiko’s catalogue leans towards the dressier end of the spectrum - but, of course, there are exceptions, and the SBGE215G is a perfect example. This sporty GMT is an evolution of the SBGE201G; it shares the same large 44mm case. But while the SBGE201G had a steel … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The SBGE215G – the Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT in titanium appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Polaris Date - a happy middle ground

There’s a lot of options in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Polaris collection. But I think this one might be my favourite, the Polaris Date. It’s a choice purists might find a little weird. After all, this is an uncomplicated watch, lacking either the classic alarm or the more impressive chronograph/world timer functionality. And while it’s not particularly complicated, … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Polaris Date - a happy middle ground appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

EVENT: 4 watches & 4 quotes from the Australian launch of the new Grand Seiko quartz GMT calibre

During the week, we were privileged to host the official Seiko Australia launch of the Grand Seiko GMT Quartz Calibre at a Melbourne restaurant called Kuro Kisumé. We’ve had some good old times over the years, but this was really up there. Minds were blown by the food – believe the hype – wrists were … ContinuedThe post EVENT: 4 watches & 4 quotes from the Australian launch of the new Grand Seiko quartz GMT calibre appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Grand Seiko’s dressy GMT - the SBGM235

Most of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches are built around one base - the 9S calibre, which turns 20 years old this year. The brand has celebrated with a series of limited editions, and this, the SBGM235, is the latest. Coming from the brand’s elegance collection, the SBGM235 follows the same fundamental form as the cream-dialled … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Grand Seiko’s dressy GMT – the SBGM235 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Story in a second: All the complications you could possibly want in a Panerai, in a small(er) package. There’s something about Panerai that I’ve always found fascinating. I don’t know if it’s because of the instantly recognisable shape of the case, the origins of the brand as a supplier of wrist-worn diving instruments to the Italian … ContinuedThe post IN-DEPTH: The 42mm Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Power Reserve (PAM01537), the little Panerai that could … appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Quartz, but not as you know it - the Grand Seiko SBGN007 GMT

Quartz isn’t something that comes across my desk too often, so you know when it does that it’s something special - and this Grand Seiko is definitely something special. There’s a handful of truly exceptional, iconic quartz movements out there, and the 9F is amongst the finest. And now, with the addition of a GMT, … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Quartz, but not as you know it – the Grand Seiko SBGN007 GMT appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

INTRODUCING: Made for adventuring over and under seas - the Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT Limited Edition SBGE245

There are certain (and few) movements in watchmaking that truly define a brand. Seiko’s Spring Drive is one of them. Unveiled by the Japanese manufacturer in 1999, it was four years later – after the inclusion of an improved automatic winding system and longer power-reserve – that the smooth sweeping calibre was adopted into the … ContinuedThe post INTRODUCING: Made for adventuring over and under seas – the Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT Limited Edition SBGE245 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: What makes a travel watch? Exploring Rome with the Longines Conquest V.H.P. GMT Flash Setting

A few weeks ago I travelled to Rome to check out the Longines Conquest V.H.P. GMT Flash Setting, a GMT not like any other. And in between the first-look video, horse racing and spectacular rooftop launches, we thought we’d do some sightseeing around Rome and put the V.H.P. GMT through its paces as a travel … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: What makes a travel watch? Exploring Rome with the Longines Conquest V.H.P. GMT Flash Setting  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: The Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT is a contender for the hottest watch of 2018

Since their dramatic reboot in 2012, Tudor has continually upped the game. From the original Black Bay, to the development of in-house movements, new case materials, and complications like the chronograph, every year brings a new surprise. Based on this track record, I’m always excited to see what Tudor will do next with the Black … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: The Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT is a contender for the hottest watch of 2018 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The 1955 Pan Am GMT-Master origin story never gets old. Curious whether the article covers why that specific route demanded a second timezone on the dial, or just the historical fact of the commission.

Fair question. Most pieces lean hard on the romance of that Pan Am brief without digging into the actual operational need, which honestly makes the whole thing feel a bit like retroactive justification. The transatlantic routes required crew coordination across time zones, sure, but whether Rolex's solution was genuinely demanded or just a brilliant answer to a problem that could've been solved a dozen other ways? That's the detail everyone skips. Still a great watch, though.
