Richard Mille Caliber RMAC1 (RM 011)

The Richard Mille RMAC1 is the in-house automatic flyback chronograph that powers the iconic RM 011 Felipe Massa series, launched in 2007 and arguably the single most-recognised Richard Mille reference in modern luxury watchmaking. Skeletonised tonneau-shaped movement with annual calendar, 60-minute countdown, 12-hour totaliser, and Vaucher Manufacture base. The watch that established Richard Mille as a global luxury phenomenon.

The watch that defined modern Richard Mille

Richard Mille launched the RM 011 Felipe Massa in 2007 as a chronograph created in collaboration with the Brazilian Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa. The watch combined the brand's signature tonneau case shape with a complex automatic flyback chronograph featuring an annual calendar, 60-minute countdown, 12-hour totaliser, and the brand's skeletonised aesthetic visible through the dial side. Inside was the RMAC1 caliber: a Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier base movement with extensive Richard Mille modifications including custom skeletonised baseplate, variable-inertia balance, and the brand's signature splined screw heads.

Vaucher base, Richard Mille modifications

The RMAC1 architecture begins with a Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier automatic chronograph base movement. Vaucher (in which Hermès holds a 25% stake) is one of the most respected mid-tier Swiss movement makers, supplying high-grade base movements to brands including Hermès, Parmigiani Fleurier, and Richard Mille. Richard Mille's modifications include: a fully skeletonised baseplate machined from the Vaucher base, a variable-inertia balance wheel with adjustment screws (replacing the regulator arm), polished bevels and finishing to Richard Mille standard, and the brand's tonneau-shaped bridge work that fits the iconic Richard Mille case shape.

Materials experimentation

The RM 011 case has appeared in an extraordinary range of materials over its near-twenty-year production run: NTPT Carbon (one of the first wristwatch applications), red gold, white gold, titanium, ceramic, sapphire, Quartz TPT, magnesium-aluminium alloys, and various Richard Mille-developed composite materials. Each material variant typically becomes a distinct reference within the RM 011 family (RM 011-FM, RM 011-03, RM 011-AT, RM 011 Black NTPT, etc.). The case itself is a complex three-piece tonneau construction requiring 78 components and held together by 20 splined screws - the construction approach that defines the visual Richard Mille identity.

The Felipe Massa partnership

Felipe Massa was the first major Formula 1 driver to partner with Richard Mille and wear the brand publicly during F1 races. The 2007 RM 011 collaboration positioned Richard Mille at the centre of Formula 1 sponsorship, and subsequent partnerships expanded the brand's motorsport associations to McLaren (RM 50 series), Lotus (RM 50-01), and other F1 teams. The Felipe Massa name remained on the RM 011 reference family for years before being phased out in modern variants. Massa famously wore his RM 011 during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix accident in which he sustained a head injury - and the watch survived intact.

Where it sits and what it costs

The RM 011 is widely cited as the most-produced single Richard Mille reference family by total production volume. Estimates suggest several thousand units across all material and dial variants over the production run. Retail pricing varied dramatically by material: USD 130,000-175,000 for early titanium and gold variants in the late 2000s, climbing to USD 200,000-450,000 for advanced composite material variants in the 2010s. Secondary-market values for sought-after variants (NTPT Carbon, sapphire, certain gold variants) regularly trade above retail. The RM 011 production was discontinued in 2022 to focus the line on the newer RM 72-01 chronograph, but existing examples remain in active circulation. The RM 011 is the watch that took Richard Mille from luxury indie status to mainstream luxury phenomenon.
