Maurice de Mauriac

Founded in 1997 by Daniel Dreifuss in Zurich, Maurice de Mauriac is one of Switzerland's most personal independent watchmakers. Small annual production, hand-finished watches, and a full bespoke commission service run from the family's own atelier on Tödistrasse. Now co-run with Daniel's twin sons Massimo and Leonardo.

The Maurice de Mauriac Story

Daniel Dreifuss founded Maurice de Mauriac in Zurich in 1997, after training as a watchmaker in Switzerland and working with several Swiss maisons. From the outset the project was set up as an atelier rather than a brand: small annual production, no mass distribution, direct relationships with the buyer, and a full bespoke-commission service alongside a modest catalogue of ready-made references. The workshop still sits at Tödistrasse 48 in Zurich, and every watch is hand-assembled and hand-finished there.

The house style is minimalist and legibility-first. Dials are clean, indices are usually applied bar or Arabic, and the design vocabulary sits between Bauhaus and Zurich modernism. Case shapes range from classic round to the maison's signature cushion, tonneau and off-set profiles. Movements are Swiss-sourced (predominantly ETA, Sellita and select complications from La Joux-Perret), then decorated and regulated in-house before assembly. Chronographs, complications and one-off commissions form a significant share of the workshop's output.

Since 2015 the atelier has been co-run by Daniel's twin sons Massimo and Leonardo Dreifuss, who joined the business after their own training. The generational transition has kept the maison consistent while opening a small but active social channel around the workshop's day-to-day. Annual production remains modest - a few hundred pieces per year - and every watch leaves with a personalised engraving option and direct workshop follow-up. Maurice de Mauriac is not trying to be big; it is trying to be personal, and it has done that consistently for over 25 years.

Iconic Collections

Since 2005
L1
The signature round three-hander. 42mm steel case, Sellita or ETA automatic, clean bar-index dial. The reference many owners commission first because it wears with anything.
Since 2008
L2
The cushion-case take on the house style. 40-44mm cushion steel case, alternate dial layouts, ETA-based automatic. The versatile daily piece with a distinct silhouette.
Since 2010
L3 Chronograph
The chronograph reference. 42-44mm steel case, Valjoux 7750 or La Joux-Perret chronograph movement, bi-compax or tri-compax dial layouts. Where the atelier does most of its complication work.
Since 2012
L4 Dress
The dress reference. 39-40mm slim steel or gold case, hand-wound movement in the smaller variants, minimalist stick or Roman-numeral dial. Made for buyers who want a formal MdM.
Since 1998
Bespoke
The commission service the atelier has run since near-inception. Buyer specifies case, dial, hands, complication and personal engraving; production takes 3-6 months. Roughly a third of annual output.
Since 2016
Marine
The 300m-rated sports/dive line. 42mm steel case, rotating dive bezel, matte grained dial, automatic Sellita SW200 movement. The tool-watch answer for the buyer who wants an all-conditions Zurich watch.
