Soprod Caliber A10 (Newton P092)

The Soprod A10 (now also marketed as the Newton P092) is a Swiss-made automatic that serves as a direct, dimensionally interchangeable alternative to the ETA 2892-A2. Used by independent and mid-tier brands including Christopher Ward, NOMOS (in some chrono modules), and many microbrands as a higher-grade non-ETA alternative.

Why an ETA 2892 alternative exists

Through the 2000s and 2010s the Swatch Group restricted ETA movement supply to non-Swatch brands as a strategic move. This created an opportunity for independent Swiss movement makers to develop alternatives to the most popular ETA references. Sellita filled the role for the ETA 2824-2; for the higher-grade ETA 2892-A2, the alternatives are the Soprod A10, the Sellita SW300, and a few smaller suppliers. Soprod, based in Les Reussilles in the Bernese Jura, has been making the A10 since the early 2000s.

Direct dimensional compatibility

The A10 is engineered as a direct drop-in replacement for the ETA 2892-A2: same 25.6 mm diameter, same height, same dial-feet positions, same hand sizes, same case-mounting screws. A watch case designed for an ETA 2892 will accept a Soprod A10 without modification. This makes the A10 attractive to brands transitioning away from ETA, or to microbrands that want a Swiss-made movement without dealing with ETA quotas. The Soprod is also typically slightly more expensive than a Sellita SW300, but with finishing and quality control that some users prefer.

Newton P092 rebrand

In recent years Soprod has marketed the A10 architecture under the "Newton P092" name in some commercial contexts (typically for direct-to-consumer sales and through certain wholesalers). The Newton P092 is mechanically identical to the A10; it is essentially the same movement with a re-branded designation. The intent is to position the architecture more aggressively against Sellita and to support Soprod's independent identity outside the major Swiss group structures.

Brands using the A10

The A10 powers watches at Christopher Ward (in their non-Sellita references and chronograph modules), Bremont (in selected mid-tier references), various Czech and German microbrands, and many smaller European watchmakers who want a Swiss-made automatic without Swatch group dependency. NOMOS uses Soprod modules in some chronograph applications. The full list is long because Soprod, like Sellita, sells movements broadly to the trade.

Where it sits

For watches in the USD 800-3,000 range that need a Swiss automatic, the A10 / Newton P092 sits in roughly the same tier as the Sellita SW300. Both are credible ETA 2892-A2 alternatives. The Soprod has a slight reputation premium in some collector circles for finishing consistency; the Sellita has wider availability. For consumers, the practical difference is small: both are 28,800 vph, hacking, manual-wind, COSC-certifiable, well-supported in service. The choice between them is largely up to the watch brand specifying the engine.
