RECOMMENDED READING: Is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date vulgar or virtuous?

In the past, owning a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date meant something different to what it does now. It was the President’s watch, worn by those who controlled the destinies of millions around the world, making daily decisions that mattered. Now the perception of the Day-Date is influenced by rappers and Instagram hustlers, offering an ostentatious … ContinuedThe post RECOMMENDED READING: Is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date vulgar or virtuous? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Hands-On: De Bethune DB28 Steel Wheels Blue “The Hour Glass”

De Bethune is the latest amongst a number of watchmakers to take the covers off a commemorative edition to mark the 40th anniversary of Singapore watch retail powerhouse The Hour Glass. For the occasion, De Bethune has put together a variant of its signature DB28 with sprung lugs that’s entirely clad in brilliant, blued titanium. First unveiled in polished titanium in 2018, the Steel Wheels is essentially a DB28 wearing a little less. A partially open-worked dial – which is actually the delta-shaped barrel bridge – reveals its pair of skeletonised barrels and gears. While the original Steel Wheels captures the essence of De Bethune, combining its trademark design with the brand’s fundamental technical innovations, it was lacking a generous dose of blued titanium, a gorgeous, heat-treated alloy that is synonymous with the brand. Colour consistency That has now been rectified with the DB28 Steel Wheels Blue, arguably the purest – and bluest – distillation of the brand’s core values and technical achievements. It features an intense, mirror-polished, blued titanium case and dial that form a striking contrast against the exposed inner mechanics. Though blued titanium is also used by other brands today, De Bethune was amongst the first to mirror-polish its titanium cases and more crucially, started using heat treatment to blue titanium way back in 2006. An example of an early De Bethune using blued titanium, a DB25L from 2010 with a blued dial...

Cartier’s Santos de Cartier is the perfect dress watch for 2019

Editor’s note: The Santos de Cartier is the perfect dress watch for modern times. Adaptable, versatile and restrained - but with a clear personality. It’s also based on a watch that’s more than 100 years old. Which really is a testament to good design. Long live the Santos!  Few watches can rival Cartier’s Santos in terms … ContinuedThe post Cartier’s Santos de Cartier is the perfect dress watch for 2019 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

EDITOR’S PICK: The Longines Conquest V.H.P. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has the craziest damn colourway we’ve seen in a long time (and we can’t look away)

Editor’s note: It’s just 37 days until the 2018 Commonwealth Games, to be held on Australia’s glorious high-rise holiday haven, the Gold Coast. This alarming reminder brings one of the oddest, in its way quite refreshing, watch releases of the year sharply back into focus; the Conquest V.H.P. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games edition. I don’t know if it’s … ContinuedThe post EDITOR’S PICK: The Longines Conquest V.H.P. INSIGHT: A Due double take – two perspectives on the smaller Panerai Luminor Due models

Ever since we first saw them at SIHH, the collective Time+Tide team has been crushing hard on the new Luminor Due models, particularly the 38 and 42mm offerings. Now, obviously these are watches with strong cross-gender appeal, so we thought it’d be a smart idea to get two takes on these models, courtesy of slender-wristed … ContinuedThe post INSIGHT: A Due double take – two perspectives on the smaller Panerai Luminor Due models appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph WT

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph WT is, in marked contrast to the Polaris Automatic, a complex beast indeed, with (as you could probably guess) both chronograph and world time functionality in the one case. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this complication-combo, as the very impressive Calibre 752 pops up in sportier parts of their … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph WT appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Starry-eyed for the Montblanc Bohème Day & Night

The petite Montblanc Bohème Day & Night isn’t exactly bohemian, nor are any of Montblanc’s timepieces really, but as much as this watch has all the signs of studied fine watchmaking, the viewer has to acknowledge the Day & Night is a little romantic. For all Montblanc’s credibility, hard luxury can still have a softness, … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Starry-eyed for the Montblanc Bohème Day & Night appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
