Omega has quietly done the thing every Speedmaster enthusiast has been begging for since the 42mm Moonwatch became the collectible everyone's wife-approved shortlist. The Speedmaster 38 collection just got refreshed with round sub-dials, a proper Moonwatch-style caseback, and a new no-date black-dial reference that reads as a shrunk Moonwatch. Seven references, €6,400 to €12,900, cal. 3330 / 3332 with silicon hairspring. This is the modern-era Speedmaster Reduced.
The one everyone is going to buy
Reference 324.30.38.50.01.002. Steel case, black varnished dial, no date, printed Super-LumiNova, white painted hands, round sub-dials, aluminium tachymeter bezel with the "dot over ninety" and "dot diagonal to 70" that every Moonwatch owner recognises on sight. On paper this is a 38mm chronograph with an automatic movement. On the wrist it is the Moonwatch, one wrist size down, at €6,400. Omega has not called it that. They do not have to.
Why this matters
The 38mm Speedmaster line has existed for years, but ever since 2017 it wore oval sub-dials, applied indices, and a "dressy" identity that put it in the ladies-collection segment of most Omega ADs. It sold, but it never really scratched the itch of the enthusiast who wanted the Moonwatch design language in a smaller case. That gap is exactly what the original Speedmaster Reduced filled from 1988 until 2013, before Omega discontinued it.
The 2026 refresh brings back round sub-dials, strips the dial text down, and adds the no-date black-varnish reference that closes the loop. For the first time since the Speedmaster Reduced went out of production, there is a proper mini-Moonwatch in Omega's line-up at the boutique. The community has been asking for it for twelve years. Omega delivered it in year 2026.

What changed versus the previous Speedmaster 38
- Round sub-dials, back. The 2017-onwards oval counters are gone. The three registers are round again, exactly the way a Moonwatch reads.
- Less dial text. Omega cleaned up the printed captions under 12. The dial looks more like a 1960s Speedmaster and less like a modern spec-sheet.
- Moonwatch-style bezel typography. "Dot over ninety", "dot diagonal to 70". These are the details Moonwatch collectors obsess over on the vintage market. Now on a 38mm.
- Silicon hairspring in cal. 3330 / 3332. Magnetism becomes a non-issue. Previous 38s used the older cal. 3330 without silicon.
- Bracelet upgrade. New five-link with a comfort-release folding clasp. Two-position 2.30mm adjustment for summer wrist swelling.
38mm x 44.96mm lug-to-lug is small by 2026 standards but exactly right for a mini-Moonwatch. On a 7-inch wrist it reads as a proper vintage chronograph proportion; on a 6.5-inch wrist it wears like a full-size sports piece. The 14.75mm thickness is on the tall side because of the box sapphire and the chronograph plate, but the shorter lug-to-lug keeps it hugging the wrist. The 18mm lug width takes it into leather easily and is the same as the 42mm Moonwatch after 2021's minor case revisions.
The Speedmaster Reduced conversation, honestly
The community has spent twelve years calling for a Reduced revival. That was the 39mm Speedmaster with an automatic movement Omega made from 1988 until 2013, and it became a cult grail on the secondary market as prices for the 42mm Moonwatch climbed. Chrono24 listings for a clean Reduced sit at €2,500-€4,500 in 2026, which is a lot for what was originally the entry-level Speedy.
The 2026 Speedmaster 38 refresh is not literally the Reduced. It is 1mm smaller (38 vs 39), it uses a modern automatic chronograph movement (cal. 3330/3332 vs the old cal. 3220 for the Reduced), and it costs €6,400 instead of the €3,500 the Reduced had at retail in 2013. What it delivers, though, is the same core promise: a Moonwatch-look chronograph in a smaller case, at a price that sits below the Moonwatch Professional. That is enough to close the twelve-year gap.
Who this is for
- You have a smaller wrist and the 42mm Moonwatch overhangs. The Speedy 38 no-date solves that without stepping down in movement quality.
- You already own a Moonwatch Professional and you want the "second Speedmaster" that fits under a shirt cuff or on a lighter day.
- You cross-shopped a vintage Reduced on Chrono24 and hesitated on the age of the movement and the case wear.
- You want a chronograph with round sub-dials and Moonwatch typography that is not €10,000+ of steel Moonwatch Professional territory.
Skip it if: you already own a Speedy 38 from 2017-2024 with oval sub-dials and the dial-layout tweaks alone are not worth a €6,400 replacement to you. And skip it if you were hoping Omega would revive the actual manual-wind Reduced with a Lemania base movement, which they were never going to do.
The verdict
The Speedmaster 38 refresh is Omega listening properly to what enthusiasts have been shouting for a decade. Round sub-dials, no-date black dial, Moonwatch typography, silicon hairspring, and a €6,400 starting price that sits below the Moonwatch Professional. The reference to remember is 324.30.38.50.01.002. Boutique-fresh Moonwatches will still sell to the traditional buyer, but the community that wanted a mini-Moonwatch now finally has one on the shelf. Buy the no-date. Don't overthink it.
