Why is 36mm coming back?
The 42-44mm era ran from about 2004 to 2018, then 40mm dominated until 2022. The 36mm revival tracks a broader move away from oversized watches and coincides with Rolex bringing back the Explorer 36 in 2021 and the Datejust 36 continuing to outsell the Datejust 41.
Is 36mm too small for men?
No. Most male wrists sit between 6.5 and 7.5 inches, where a 36mm case with 44-46mm lug-to-lug fits properly. The Rolex Datejust 36 and Explorer 36 have been men's watches for 65 years. The 42mm size that felt normal in 2010 was itself an outlier.
Which 36mm watch holds value best?
The Rolex Explorer 36 and Datejust 36 both hold retail on the secondary market. The Tudor Black Bay 36 depreciates ~15% over three years, which is normal for Tudor. Cartier Santos Medium and Omega Constellation 36mm hold roughly 60-70% of retail.
Is a 36mm Rolex a women's watch?
No. The Datejust 36 was launched in 1945 as a men's chronometer and remains marketed to both sexes today. The 36mm Explorer, launched in 1953 and reissued in 2021, is a mountaineering watch by mission. The women's watch positioning is a 1980s-2010s aberration.
